too_pointer
Excuse me if this has been asked before I have a Outers Varminters rifle rest and the back and front are both rubbor armored. I think I have seen before that it isn't a good idea to sight in a rifle on a hard surface ?? I hope you "real" shooters might give me some imput. Thanks too_
AJ
Re: Rifle rest question ?? Hey Too, Yep, you are correct. If you shoot from a hard surface, the POI will be higher from the gun jumping. You can reduce this by adding a blanket between the rest and the table. On the other side, a very soft rest will shoot a lower POI. Studies have found packed sand to be the best medium. Thats why we shoot from sandbags. bwlacy
Re: Rifle rest question ?? So if I sight my rifle in using a sandbag but I hunt from a box blind and use the hard 2x4 window sill for a rest, where will the POI be? Or what about using a hard Y stick for a shooting stick? How much difference are we talking about at 100 yds? Matt
AJ
Re: Rifle rest question ?? If you rest the forend directly on a 2x4 the POI can be higher. Always use a hard to soft junction for shooting rests. Place your hand between the forend and the 2x4 and you will be ok. Another thing is to use the rifles sling between the forend and 2x4. How much the POI will change depends on a lot of variables. Is the barrel floated, what is the bedding like, how long is the barrel, what the cartridge is, etc. I can not say it will be off xx" at 100 yards. I have seen deltas measuring about 6" at 100 yards. bwlacy
Re: Rifle rest question ?? Hey thanks. I've never heard this before. So if I know that I will have a hard rest while hunting, what if I sight in with a hard rest? Then if I shoot freehand the POI will be low? Now that I think about this, all 3 deer I shot this year I hit kind of high. Not enough to not make a lung hit, but higher than I was holding. I just thought it was me. johnf
Re: Rifle rest question ?? I didn't know about the whole soft rest thing, I just do what seems comfortable. When sighting in I use a thick Mexican made wool blanket folded up tight. When I shoot off a rest in the woods, I put the forend of my gun on top of my fist, usually with gloves on. I've always hit where I aimed.
too_pointer
Re: Rifle rest question ?? I'm sure your rug and hand accomplish the same thing as far a poi. I just wanted to clarify about what I had read on sighting in off a hard surface. AJ explained that fine too_pointer
