Stoeger M2000 Field Results

Well, I finally got to test my shotgun out. The end result, is that for a $350 semi-auto, it's ok...

Two weeks ago, I took it out and shot a round of skeet with it, and got the following results: It will not cycle my 2 3/4" light target loads, won't even eject the shell. It will not properly cycle 2 3/4" 3 dram federal dove loads (kicks the first shell out, but jams while trying to chamber the second round).

On Monday, I took it out to the marsh. I found out that it will cycle 3" duck loads. Which, luckily, is exactly what I wanted it to do. Not only that, but while my dog was running around acting stupid (it was our first time out this year) he splashed some mud up on to the stock. I looked down at the gun and said to myself, this is exactly why I want a cheap gun out here and not my citori.

On the bright sight, the first shot at a duck was a hit. Now I just need to work more with my dog on that actual "retrieving" part. Having to wade out and pick up a duck is a bit embarrassing while your dog is standing there looking at you.

I had a wonderful time out in the marsh, the gun worked exactly like I wanted it to. However, I'm not sure if I would actually recommend this gun to anybody or not. I still need to shoot it a few more times to see how I really feel about it.

I have done a bit of research, there are a few people saying that there is little gunsmithing involved, but that you can fix the 2 3/4" shell problems. I'm not about to start grinding or sanding on the gun, since it might end up on gunbroker. I am still trying to decide if I'll keep the gun or just try to trade up for a used 1100.

Thanks for the info. It may loosen up after a few hundred rounds through it. But, it can be a frustrating few hundred rounds. How about some heavy field loads? Something like 1 1/4 oz loads about 1300 fps (commonly called hi-brass) or some Rem Nitro Sporting Clays ammo?

How long did it take your dog to train you to retrieve?

i'll look into some heavier loads - you get what you pay for, i know. i got a cheap semi-auto and it shoots like a cheap semi-auto.

They say you must run about 150 heavier loads through it to break it in. Also make sure that you have cleaned all the packing grease off the action, slides, and spring. The packing grease can get dirt in it and jam it.

I've had one for two years (duck and pheasant) and I think it is great. It only jammed twice with the first box of rounds I put through it (skeet load) and have not had another prolem since. The chokes fit really tight that first time, but after the first time they worked fine.

Break it in and give it a chance, you might be suprised.
