Oh the wheels are turning upstairs

The past couple weeks ive been thinking a change needs to happen in my life.

Ill explain what im up to right now.

19 years old, full time college student with a full time job.

I work a construction job at 22 an hour right now (34dollars one year from now). But i really really dont like this job at all.

I have to drive an hour to work, which stinks. I dont like the people at all there. I can do the physical work, but i know i have to much upstairs to be doing the grunt work. I should have a job where i use my head or one where you dont just hammer. Im working on a three story high school in ann arbor. And let me tell you, its not fun.

Over the past few months, ive been thinking about moving up north, like around the Midland, Clare, Harrison, area of michigan. And getting a decent job until i can finish my college degree.

My heart lies farther north. I hate city life, i hate bumper to bumper traffic. I hate waking up and not being able to go out in your boxers to get the mail.

If i could find a good job farther north, id leave this instantly.

Sure the pays good, but if youre not happy, who cares.

I want to leave this area before i get old, so ill have time to get going.

What do you guys think, should i go find a job farther north. I honestly dont like what im doing right now at all. I can handle the physical and mental part like nothing. I want a job that i use my brain more, because i know ive got alot upstairs.

So...should i go while im young? If i find a job farther north, decent wages, id be out the next day.

Pray about it is my first suggestion. Also whatever you do, finish your education. I would say quit the job keep in college and try to find another job...If you leave school even now just to get a job, it will beh arder to get back into the school head, trust me. Good luck!

Hey guy! What is your major?

Give up the work and get the degree! You will never be sorry!

Head to Idaho! We have the U of I in Moscow, 30 miles away! We have WSU in Pullman, 35 miles away!

We are living in a town of about 35,000! Spokane is 100 miles away and it is too BIG for me. It is about 250,000! I like it where we have our trailer in the summertime! Harvard, ID population about 50! Just right and we are not in town!! LOL!!

Definitely do it while you are young. I spent too much time in jobs that I knew I was too smart for until I realized that I needed to go back to school. Now I am almost 30, work full time in basically a thankless job, and go to school full time. I know I will be better off in the end, as hard as it is. It will be much easier to do it while you are younger.

If I were you, I'd move South! One of my best friends is from Michigan, near the Detroit area. He owned his own framing company, made lots of money had a nice house and land and all of that. But he wasn't doing what he wanted to do, which was use his true talents. He's a musician and moved down here a little over a year ago to be the Music Pastor of my church. He says he'll never go back, and even convinced his parents who have lived in Michigan all their lives to move down here to NC and they love it! Best of luck in whatever you decide. "Get behind Jesus and he'll show you the way."

Re: Oh the wheels are turning upstairs

I say keep the job, finish school like you planned and build a good resume to show even a desk boss that you are not afraid of hard work. Every little bit helps and the pay is great. You'd be surprised at how fast you can go from having everything in the palm of your hand and no worries to being dirt poor and wishing you had a chance at a job doing construction. You are 19 and off to a great start in your career. Plus it never hurts to buy all of the toys you want now before a woman and kids and this young and carefree life is gone forever. Good luck and stick to it. You may even save enough to build your own little cabin in the woods and pay for it free and clear. You can make something out of this like not having any worry for bills by the time you're 25 and already own your own land, home, cars, toys and be more desirable to women than most guys your age.

If moving where you want to be and working on your degree is an option, I'd do it.

Until you get your degree, aren't you somewhat limited in job options?

I live up near Midland, an area that you may move too, its nice country, I live 15 minutes from Midland. Our area right now has lots of houses for sale. With Delphi having trouble and being sold people don't know what to do. UAW workers are either transfering back to GM or taking buy outs. They are being replaced with workers at $14.00 an hour and skilled trades in the $20 to $30.00 an hour rate with no benefits at this time. I am hoping in the future these workers will be able to buy benefits as that is huge for a family. The whole deal of free health care just can't happen and the auto industry is seeing this and that is why you are seeing major issues in it. Plus the hourly rates were getting out of hand compare to other companies in the same business. This area is big in the automotive market and that thrives our ecomony. You have several GM and Delphi plants all within 50 miles of each other. It should get better in time and right now its just a major restructing process.

Midland has Dow Chemical, that company employs a lot of Midland people and supports that community.

As for the new building situation, its not as strong as what you are seeing down south. Sure they are building new houses and some small business but even that is slowing down and some new houses are sitting empty and builders are dropping the prices just to move them. Your seeing a few business close up too.

I like the area compared to your part of the state because I do not like the hustle of the city. My dad lives in Sterling Heights and its just too congested for me. Sure you have everything down there but its like 10 of the same thing. I come from a 1 traffic light town and like it!!

If you move up here you may not see the pay your expecting or what you have right now but the lifestyle and the ability to go hunting out your back door is pretty awesome.

Finish your college education and do what makes you feel happy. Its your life, live it how you want to live it. We only get one of these lives to live, so make your choices and be happy. Good luck!!
