Its a Melanistic deer. Melanistic deer are very dark sometimes even black. Melanism results from overproduction of pigment and is less common than albinism. Hunters see dark deer with some frequency but to actually see a Melanistic deer is rare.

That photo has been around for a couple of years. Here is another melanistic deer that was shot last year here in PA, near Allentown.

that is a sweet looking deer, love the all black - they say wearing things like solid black can make you look slimmer... maybe he was trying to keep that yearling figure?

You notice anything ironic about this picture??? grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif How about the melanistic hunter? Don't see too many african american hunters, would like to see more of them!!

COOL!! I just read a story abotu some gophers in Alberta who were caught[black] theya re lettign them go in a certain area and se if its in the breeding, I was talking to a guy I know and his dad shot one last year also, thye say they are harder to find than a albino also!! Cool stuff!!
