I perfected a great cougar call, while trying to sneak up on an elk. It works great. First you have to win an elk lottery for the first time in 15 years or so, that is only open for you for a 10 day slot, bow only. Next step is to get really sick with the flue, with a nasty cough and a high feaver, just before your elk hunt. Then you need to find some cough drops that actually do suppress coughs. You need to suck on 3 of those things all the time while hunting to keep the cough down. Now all you need is a nice 5x5 bull in his prime to be standing about 80 yrds away on the other side of a shallow creek and an uprooted tree root, that you have to sneek in on in-order to get within good bow range. It looks like a piece of cake. Good wind and the bull is feeding. It's fairly open slash, so you have to bend over and crouch down to close the distance without being spotted. You have twenty yards to go to get that perfect shot set up. All that sucking on cough drops however, and all that swallowing of air, is about to take it's toll. Your hunched over, 20 yrds to go, and out of the depths of your belly and into your throat comes the cry of a growling cougar. you try to suppress it, but it has a mind all it's own ..LOL. It lets lose with a ferocity that would make an angry cougar opponent, tuck tail and run. The bulls head comes up and he's gone in a flash, all because you have perfected the perfect cougar call. Proud of your new found calling technique, you proceed to kick yourself in the butt and suppress the tears. That was my elk hunt a few years back Very memorable hunt.
