1997xltlimited
I was at wally world the other day and was looking at some differnt guns... If you could pick one what would you pick for plinking and small game and why? 1) savage .17hmr 2) Marlin 22 3) Ruger 10/
AJ
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I would take the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin 22. While the 17 HMR is a nice cartridge that will shoot very accurately and very flat, its a lot more expensive to shoot than the 22 lr. Everyone should have a 22 lr in their collection. They are great to practice with, cheap to shoot, and very effective on small game.
johnf
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I've got a marlin model 60 that has been through the ringer and shoots great, and it's a lot cheaper to shoot than a 17. If I were going to buy a new 22 it would be a 10/22. Jeramie
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I agree 100%. You can pick up a box of 500 rounds of .22lr ammo for something like $8. that is about as cheap as it gets. Those same rounds are great for small game too. Dont get me wrong, everyone needs to shoot a .17hmr but a .22lr should be a basic for everyones collection. Step up to the .17 later on... IMHO. Btw, Id probably go with the 10/22. There is so much aftermarket stuff for them you can have a blast with that rifle for years to come.

too_pointer
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I'm not to sure about the remarks on the 10/22 being very accurate out of the box I'm not saying they all not that accurate new. It sure seems you need to change alot of parts in that gun to be as accurate as the Rem. 597 new. I'm not just saying that either as I belong to 2 rimfire sites who state that also. I would go with a .22 just not the Ruger unless you love to spend alot of $$ on it. too_
Jeramie
Re: What Small Game Rifle? Ive heard the same thing Too. I had one and honestly it did anything I could do. I definately couldnt out shoot it. Now if youre shooting match step up the barrel but nocking a squirrel out of a tree is a breeze with one. Btw, If you like the feel of the marlin or savage dont hesitate. While I like the Ruger better, both of those companies make good guns for the money. Ive had both and would not hesitate to buy another.
bowtech
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I have a marlin model 60 .......It has been through heck......but i love it..... . still shots just as good as the day i bought it
Guest Deerehunt270
Re: What Small Game Rifle? 10/22 Because it is so modifiable so if you decide to shoot smallbore sillhouette you can or decide to just make it look real cool you can. Guest Daffy
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I have the Ruger 10/22 Delux (walnut stock) and I love it. Only modification I did to it was fiber optic sights and I find it amazingly accurate. Actually had it out this morning at the rifle range! Only issue i've had with it was cycling CCI Stingers. It has jammed on me 3 times with these (but I probably fired about a thousand of them in total). With other bullet types I haven't had any trouble with it. I've never had any issues with consistant accuracy or dependability (like I said it has only jamm'd 3 times with one specific bullet type that i've shot at least 1000 of, and many more of other brands)

Guest ronin
Re: What Small Game Rifle? I would take the 17. I don't care about the cost comparison. I simply enjoy shooting the .17 far more than the .22. Now, for varmits around the house, I use my 22 more often than not. This is because I can put .22 shorts in it and they are pretty quiet.
