wtnhunt
Got out yesterday kind of late afternoon, had a couple hours of light to hunt, and the wind was light and in the right direction to hunt my climber. Was up in the stand by 4:45. Waited a little and called a few times with the grunt call, 2 or maybe 3 sequences of 3 soft short grunts. About 5:30 was hearing a little movement to my south coming up the hill on the other side of the ridge. The deer have been using the trails on both sides pretty heavy, so I was watching back to my left expecting deer to come on into my view in the woods. About 5:45 I turn my head and look back into the field behind me and to my right, and a yote is standing about 120 yards away scanning the field from the top of the hill. He is on my downwind side where he is standing. He is heading away from me when he goes back to walking towards the river to the south west, so I grab my can call out of my pocket, blew into the hole in the bottom of the call and let a really weak sounding fawn distress call. The yote turns immediately looks back and turns more towards me, now about 150 yards out. I let out another call and he starts heading my way. He stopped a few times on the way, and I let out another call, just before he got to the corner of the brush pile about 50 yards out to my right. The light wind is out of the southeast and he crossed my wind. Had my bow in my hand and the release ready. He was hung up at the tip of the brushpile edge, could not get a shot sitting across my body. I needed him to come on around the pile about 15-20 more yards to be in my lane. Just two more steps and I figured he would commit to following the brush pile edge, but he looked up in my direction not directly at me, then looked down the field several times. Think he knew something was not right and realized the sound was not coming from the field. But this is the first time I have ever called a coyote in. Was pretty cool to see him turn and come in on my calls, just too bad I could not get a shot. Did see a deer come out about the same place in the field just 10 minutes after the yote was gone.
