wtnhunt
Saturday morning was a cool clear morning in the mid 30’s, light wind out of the southeast. Was hunting my climbing stand setup looking over a food plot of a winter mix from hamann farms, with the thick hardwoods to my back and my left. This plot is between a brush pile and the woods. The climber had me at about 14 feet or so, still good cover at that height, but some good natural openings that I opened a bit more. At 9:20 was about go get down and saw 2 does out in the field back to my right a good ways off headed towards our big clover/trefoil plot. I grunted 2 times short soft grunts. Within just a few minutes I saw a 4 point, one I had passed on several times before come out on a heavy used trail about 60-70 yards away down the hill from directly to my south. I know they use this trail and setup back off of it hoping they would feed through the plot instead of making their way through the pile where I am sure deer bed from time to time. The little 4 pointer was coming from the woods headed towards the brush pile, I let out a couple grunts. Another buck came out right behind him, not sure think he was another 4 pointer. The first one was in the middle of the plot heading to the north towards a sycamore tree in the end of the plot where it opens into the mixed grass open hay field. He got to the edge of the plot and the brush pile headed my direction when another considerably bigger buck came out from the same trail. The big buck stopped at the edge of the woods and the plot raking his antlers on the limbs and scraping the ground. He was a good solid 3.5 year old buck, looked to have 8 or maybe possibly 10 points, the antlers extended out past his ears probably 17 or 18 inches outside spread. His body size dwarfed the other two deer out in the plot. I could not tell for sure about the brows on the deer, but I am sure he had 4 points on his right side. We had not gotten any pics of this deer before on any of our cams. As he came out into the plot, he put his head down and made a pushing gesture and the buck right in front of him veered away from him to the left and the bigger buck was now the second deer in line heading through the plot along the brush pile right into my openings. I got my bow off the hanger, got it up release on and ready to draw as he was making his way in. Now another deer comes out, about halfway size wise between the first two deer and the bigger buck, possibly a 2.5 year old. Then a fifth deer comes out and he is another bigger buck, but not quite as big as the other big buck. Was trying to keep my attention focused on the bigger buck that was the third to come out. He was within about 40 yards now and headed right into an opening that would give me a 24 yard shot. The first buck, little 4 pointer stopped just past the sycamore tree put his head down and I drew my bow. The big buck was getting closer and I knew if he got to where the first buck had stopped I would have a clear 24 yard shot. I held my bow at full draw for what seemed like forever. The buck stopped behind some limbs hanging over from the sycamore perfectly broadside, and thought I had an opening, and was about tempted to let the arrow fly, but just a few more yards and he would be wide open, so I was content with waiting for the perfect shot. The first buck, must have been looking at me, guess he saw me turning following the bigger buck with my bow, not really sure. The four pointer I had passed up probably a half a dozen times directly to my west now, turned and headed back down the hill in a bit of a hurry, but never blew or stomped. The other three deer also took off and the big buck just stood there watching them take off. Still holding my pin right behind his shoulder I just could not risk the shot. Looking though the site it looked good, down the shaft of the arrow looked like I might hit one limb. Of course he turned like the others and headed back into the woods, and I let my bow down. He did not seem too spooked. I waited until about 10 and got down. They never blew, and most of them just trotted into the woods.

Squirrelhunter91
Re: think he will be back? William, he should be back. They weren't alarmed, that little 4 pt just new something wasn't right, but couldn't pinpoint it.

[/ QUOTE ] Think that 4 point might have me figured out and considered moving my climber, he seems really wary. This was the same 4 pointer I think someone already shot at on the property behind us, watched him one afternoon casually feed through the plot and then later on came racing through the plot. Would be great to see the big boy come back through without all the extra eyes.

wtnhunt
Re: think he will be back? Going to setup a scrape dripper somewhere between my climber and his scrape today. Wind should be right to hunt the stand again tomorrow afternoon.
