Kenny Rogers does it again...

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

game got a little scary for the tigers in the 9th--but yes Kenny pitched another terrific game. Nice that he's putting his energy into throwing a ball and not on a camera man. He was pretty emotional after the game--I think it was a good move saving him for game two so his next start will be with the home crowd.

Good World Series so far.

Though I'm pretty surprised St. Louis didn't make a bigger deal out of the pine tar...errrrrrrrrr...."dirt" on his hand. smirk.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

yeah...whatever it was..they made him wash it off...and like the announcers said after the game...the cards can't use it as an excuse....that was only for 1 inning...what about the other 7 he pitched...he just threw a great game

Agreed. However, I'm not sure exactly what the rule is, but if you get caught with that, dont you get ejected from the game?

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

thats what i thought...but from what they were saying last night they (the umpires)just told him to wash whatever it was off and told him they want to keep it fair or whatever...maybe its just a judgement call, and since it was just that first inning and not something like the 5 or 6th then they just told him to clean it off confused.gif

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

[ QUOTE ]

The controversy surrounding the brown substance spotted on Kenny Rogers' pitching hand during the first inning Sunday night is addressed in Rule 8.02 of the Official Baseball Rules.

According to rule 8.02(a)(2), (4) and (5), the pitcher shall not:

(2) expectorate on the ball, either hand or his glove;

(4) apply a foreign substance of any kind to the ball; [or]

(5) deface the ball in any manner.

According to the penalties set forth in the Official Baseball Rules, "For violation of any part of Rules 8.02(a)(2) through (6): (a) The pitcher shall be ejected immediately from the game and shall be suspended automatically for 10 games."

However, at the bottom of the 'penalties' section is the following disclaimer:

Rules 8.02(a)(2) through 8.02(a)(6) Comment: If a pitcher violates either Rule 8.02(a)(2) or Rule 8.02(a)(3) and, in the judgment of the umpire, the pitcher did not intend, by his act, to alter the characteristics of a pitched ball, then the umpire may, in his discretion, warn the pitcher in lieu of applying the penalty.

In this case, it would seem, the umpires felt that Rogers "did not intend, by his act, to alter the characteristics of a pitched ball."

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

OH yeah, it was definately a judgement call, I'm just not sure why the ump decided to do what he did. I mean, its the World Series and a pitcher (an old, junk ball pitcher at that) has something that looks like pine tar on his hand and you don't look into it?

Not taking away anything from Rogers because he pitched great, I just have to question why that wasn't a bigger issue.

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

The way that i see it is, The umps have the final say. They should know the difference between dirt and pine tar or whatever. It was gone after the first inning and he was still dominat. So i have to take his word and the Umps word that it was dirt. It surely didnt help him a lot because he was still awesome the rest of the way. what was it? not sure but im takin his word. Innocent until proven guilty.

I dont know man, I've seen dirt, and I've seen pine tar and that looked like pine tar to me.

Another thing, ESPN went back and looked at the previous two playoff series and cameras caught the same thing on his hand in those games too. Now that's just a little too ironic dont you think?

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm no forensic expert, but just by seeing it on camera I'd bet my first born son that it was pine tar. smirk.gif And like you said, he was using it the prior two games.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Rogers, like I said, but its the friggin World Series and you just let him go wash his hands and come back? I've seen pickup men's leagues with harsher umps. confused.gif The whole thing looked a little strange to me.

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

well....if it was pine tar, if it wasn't, we'll never know...you could call him a cheater if you want...but the blame for him not getting caught could be put on larussa and the umpires also...they new something was there, and laRussa could have made them check his hand, but he didn't....he came out to pitch the second and it was gone...then they talked to him after that inning....i gotta go with the umpires and the umpire supervisor on this, they have been around for a while and they can tell, they didn't think it was an illegal substance so they just told him to wash his hands (after it was already gone)...it could have been the rosin and dirt mix...it was raining pretty good the first few innings of the game...

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

I dont know about the pine tar thing. It looked too obvious even on camera. I mean....If hes going to break the rules and use pine tar, wouldnt he try to at least hide it by putting it in his baseball glove and dipping into it in there where nobody could see it????

Thats the one thing that makes me think maybe it was just dirt. But who knows. Like it was mentioned above, we probably wont ever find out.

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

That wasnt dirt. Pine tar is very hard to completely remove from your skin and his palm had a slight stain on it most of the night. Plus, if you watched him closely, he would blow into that hand and after that he would slightly tap his fingers into the tar. ESPN showed clips of it this morning. A casual observer of the game probably wouldnt have picked it up, but he clearly is tapping his fingers into that stuff on about every other pitch. Im just amazed that Larussa didnt throw a fit about it.

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

yeah i seen them play that on cold pizza....and i have gone to ESPN.com and looked at that video over and over...the blew in his hands and wiggled his fingers...i'm not even sure if his fingers even touched his hand..sure didn't look like it to me.....its just ESPN doing what the media always does and try and keep stretching things out...maybe it was dirt, maybe it was pine tar...heck...maybe it was chew...ever accidentally put your hand where someone has spit some kodiak or something? i have...looks just like that...maybe it was him chewing...and it got on his hands when taking out...who knows, bottom line..it was there the first inning and thats it...the rest of the game he dominated the cards.

Dirt is the same color..especially the dirt on the baseball field...and when it gets wet, its going to get on things..mix that wet dirt with the rosin bag and see what happens...you think they worry about going in and washing there hands completely with soap after every inning? look at every fielders hands after every game and unless they run back and wash off real quick (other than wiping off with a towel) they are going to be dirty...i'm not saying thats what it was...but hey, its a possiblity..unless you were actually there and actually inspected his hands...how can you say that it IS pine tar?? if the cards didn't worry about it and make a big deal over it...why should everyone else?

They showed slow motion and still shots of it on Cold Pizza this morning. That is what helped sell me. He clearly was using whatever that substance was to his advantage, and it sure looked like tar to me.

Re: Kenny Rogers does it again...

the only thing I'd say in his defense is that if he was gonna cheat, you'd think he'd put the pine tar in a less obvious spot on his body. Not on his pitching hand where everyone could see it.

that being said, if you think that was dirt, I'm got some ocean frong property in Oklahoma I'm trying to sell, you interested? grin.gif
