Guest TnLadyhunter
Well I have to comment on the women's side of this question in a minute. First the kids. I do not have kids of my own, but I have taken kids hunting. I have noticed that if you get kids involved in outdoor adventures such as fishing, scouting and other things, they will be happier to go on a hunt. Don't let your kids lay around in the house in front of the t.v. or video games and then expect them to want to go hunting. When they are very young teach them things like tracks and signs, of multiple animals not just what we hunt. Interest them in all aspects of the outdoors, so they can be proud to know alot about it. Teach them to use calls and when. I have found squirrels are a great introduction animal, because they are usually easily found and light guns can take one. Also let them tag along on hunts with dogs. Hunting birds, rabbits, coons whatever teach them the jump bark, tree chop, point whatever they will be entertained. Nothing is cooler than a blind with mom and dad helping you learn, or mom taking you one day then dad the next. I know not all parents hunt and if one does it tends to be dad. If you can get your kids involved they will encourage mom. She will want to see them experience things. If you don't have kids and you do have a spouse, then try to get her or him out there with you. You never know how going once can make a big difference. My husband took me out after we had been dating awhile to roost a turkey. I remember setting there on the back of a pickup truck listening to him owl hoot and coyote howl. Thinking yeah right, what is he trying to get it to do dance. "Honey can we go now?" "SHHHH" I rolled my eyes I had been helping him listen so long my ears were hurting. Then it happened I heard it, a turkey gobbled about a 100 yards out it was faint but it was there. I almost jumped out of my skin. I was so excited I was yelling was that it I heard it!! He laughed and said, "ain't you ever heard a turkey gobble?" I couldn't believe how excited it made me, I couldn't figure out why. After a day or two of thinking about it I asked what it was like hunt one. O Gosh did I get an ear full and an invite. He has always been very helpful. In the beginning he made sure on the trips he didn't push me to go if I didn't feel like it. He always made sure I was warm and having fun. Now don't get me wrong after awhile when I decided I wanted to go on my own he gave me a little tough love on what I would have to do, (climbing tree stands, cleaning game, etc.) but only when he knew that I wanted to hunt on my own. I love to hunt now and have for about 5 years. I bow, muzzleloader, rifle, turkey, rabbit, deer and whatever. I love it. But even if your wife doesn't become a serious hunter give her a chance be patient and attentive. Don't push to hard, but do encourage. Never underestimate a woman, we can do it all on our own if we decide it's what we want. Just remmember whoever, whatever, teach someone to carry on what we do to future generations. Guest Lynn_in_IN
Re: How to get family involved congrats on the upcoming little hunter!!! had you planned around the season, she could have hunted! just a joke. I was six months pregnant with my son in 1987 when I took a 8 point, 174 lb buck. Even won Womens' Division for heaviest buck. A lot of the guys at the awards banquet rolled their eyes and said,"yeah, right. you know her ole man killed that deer- she just tagged it so he could keep hunting" as I waddled up to get my award. Oh, well!!! Jealous jealous jealous! hahaha. My husband didn't even hunt the same area as I did that day. anyway, congrats again!
