wtnhunt
Do you ever get so concentrated on the shot and focused after deciding you have a good deer you are looking at and decide you are going to take the deer, that you do not take the time to try to count points. Ever after the hunt if for some reason you did not get that shot or missed are left wondering how many points the deer actually had?
3whunt
Re: Ever get so wound nope... i always kill em... j/j.... i hate that feeling too... once i know it is a deer I want.... I focus on only the shot... forget the points, how wide, how tall... then as soon as the encounter is over... pure wonderment takes over.... Hoosierbuck
Re: Ever get so wound I also make the decision, then forget about antlers. Defining a "shooter" for me is like when the Supreme Court tired to define "pornography"...one of the justices simply said, "I know it when I see it." Once I know it and see it, I don't even look at the antlers, then it's like opening a present on Chirstmas when you walk up on them. Due to circumstances, I have had the chance to really look over a couple of bucks, but those were longer shots, or deer I saw when scouting, and hunted later. Most of my deer are taken at very short range, so it all happens very fast. HB

Rhino
Re: Ever get so wound Sure William. There have been times when I didn't need to worry about counting points because I knew it was a shooter. I've killed some that had more points than I thought. Then there are some where I just didn't get a clear shot and wasn't sure how many points he had. That happened last year. I knew in an instant he was a big, mature buck with a heavy, wide rack but I never did get a clear shot or even bother to count up points. Didn't need to. wtnhunt
Re: Ever get so wound The wife and my oldest daughter have been asking how many points the deer I drew on Saturday had. I really am not sure, which seems crazy considering the deer was so close.
dogdoc
Re: Ever get so wound Honestly I don't even count points. I look at the rack and body then determine if it is a shooter. Of the 8 bucks I have shot I don't ever remember counting points until the were on the ground. todd
TOMSD5
Re: Ever get so wound count the points after i get him on the ground...in some cases like (bow hunting) a person will have time to count closely as to the points but i think with a gun and greater distances most count later... Tominator
Re: Ever get so wound Can't say as I do William. Always have had a knack for looking at the rack and knowing number of points and usually have a pretty good guess as to the score. I was off by 4" (gross) last year. Tom will tell you. RangerClay
Re: Ever get so wound Everytime! If I focus on horns I could get buck fever. So as soon as I commit to the deer, the only thing I focus on is the shoulder.
