123 4/8 P&Y
I have a question for those of you who use a deer decoy. How should I position my decoy to optimize my chances of getting a shot at a mature buck? I am a little unsure of which direction to face my decoy in relation to my stand. Does the ideal direction change when I use my decoy as a buck instead of a doe? I also want to position it so the approaching deer won't wind me. Any advice will be appreciated. Straight Shooter
Re: Decoy positioning help needed! A Doe decoy you want ot face them away from you, a buck will approach a Doe from behind. The buck decoy will be placed facing you somewhat, another buck coming in will approach a buck from head on. By all means place them witht he wind in your advantage. Goodluck to you!
Dogg6
Re: Decoy positioning help needed! I agree totally. I have had the best luck with the doe decoy facing away. You also want to make sure it is positioned to give deer entering the field a good view of it. I try to position it so as deer enter the field they see the side of the decoy. Also make sure if using a buck decoy it is not bigger than the deer in your area. I used to have this problem in my area, so I cut down the rack on the decoy. I had better luck with it after that. Mostly I use a doe decoy, this works well for both bucks and does.
