Bowtech_archer07
I was just wondering the success y'all have had with store bought rack mounts. I am just getting around to mounting my buck from last year and have the back plate, but the skull is broke in two. I was wondering how everyone's success was with the storebought skull covers that come in the kit.
NiteRunner
Re: Premade rack mounts?? I did 2 up ths year. Bought the kits from Wal-Wart on sale, so why not. Pretty easy to do, except the foam peice that fits over the skull was too small for my buck. So I pulled the leather out, it's just hot glued down so no problem. I then stuffed it with tissues, that way it would come clean to the base of the antlers, and a little hot glue to put the leather back in place. Looks pretty good. timberlandtaxi
Re: Premade rack mounts?? Personally I really don't like the cheap looking pre-made stuff on the market. You get what you pay for. Just about anyone can pukll off a mount similar to this one, and if not they aren't that expensive to have your taxidermist do for you. Bowtech_archer07
Re: Premade rack mounts?? The only thing is I don't know how to make a form for the skull plate. I have the wooden back plate, but don't know how to form the skull.
timberlandtaxi
Re: Premade rack mounts?? I use a mix of plaster of paris and ground newspaper(blow-in insulation). Mis these 50/50 and add enough water to form a thick paste (consistency of clay) and build the mold. If you need to sand after a week of drying or so you can. I also use a thin sheet of poly-fil quilt batting underneath the buckskin to keep it smooth.
RTF
Re: Premade rack mounts?? I have used mache, followed up with fleck-stone. Makes a real nice mount.
WABS
Re: Premade rack mounts?? I mold my skull out of strickly plaster of paris. Then I sand it to the exact shape I want and cover with a piece of felt (usually black or brown). I also include a picture and any slugs I find. The mule deer mount I found what was left of the Powerbelt bullet that I'd used and so for comparison I also attached to the mount an unfired bullet.
