WIDeer4Life
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Great looking turnips there. Have your deer been hitting them at all yet? Mine seem to have avoided them so far, just wondering if everyone else is having the same results. maybe its still a little too early for them to be hitting the turnips. dogdoc
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot WI--they usually hit the greens after your first good freeze. As far as the actual turnip the deer around here usually don't start eating them until very late winter when most available forage is gone--during years with big acorn crops they usually don't touch the actual turnip. todd
LETMGROW
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot We have had a couple hard frosts. The deer are really hammering them now. They don't eat the turnip much until the greens are pretty much gone. Last year we had turnips up until early February. The deer dug through the snow to get to them. This was a good food source well into winter. Our soil test came back just over neutral this past spring. The brassicas did well, however I know of some folks who have had good success with P.H. levels around 6.5. There is virtually no maintenance once the seed is planted. We try to get ours in 45 to 50 days before the first anticipated frost. Normal maturity is 45 days from planting.
wtnhunt
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Have only had a few light frosts here so far and the deer are already hitting my winter mix from hamann farms. A mix of purple tops, sugar beets, brassicas, and rape.

LETMGROW
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Tell my wife that! She has mentioned the turnip to some neighbors and they all want some. I'm thinking about closing the shop and becoming a turnip farmer. I've never heard a turnip complain!

LETMGROW
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot We also have some " whitetail Secret Spot " planted. We have noticed the deer have devoured the rape and turnip in it. It was planted a little later than the Shot Plot, hence it may have been more tender yet. Now we are considering planting a couple plots a week then two weeks later as an experiment. We are also going to look at some other brands as well. We have had good luck with Shot Plot but if there are other mixes out there we are willing to give them a try. Dogdoc seems to like Hamann Farms mix. We will try it and compare it to what we have had in the past. I never want to get hung up on one mix. The only way to know is to try others. If the deer liked Imperial's brassica in Secret spot so much, maybe they would like the Winter Greens mix too.

FSU_Seminole
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Well I can vouch for shot plot myself. I planted some back on Sept 30. The past 2 times that I've hunted the plot 14 deer have been spotted in it eating.
LETMGROW
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot The deer are eating the smaller turnip like crazy now. Later on after the turnip freezes and thaws the deer will start in on the larger ones. We observed the same thing last year. We still had turnip up until February of this year. wtnhunt
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Still quite a bit of acorns here. Have yet to see any of the turnips or sugar beets dug up in my plots. Wondering if they will start hitting them when some of the other sources start dwindling down. LETMGROW
Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot They will not really hit the turnip bulbs until you have had a couple hard frosts. Up here this isn't to worry about! Hang tight, they will start chewing on the turnip soon. Frankly we are a little behind this year, We have had a couple frosts which have stopped growth of grasses etc. but by this time of year we usually have had a two or three day stretch of below freezing weather. Not the case this year, We are a little behind because of this. In fact my turnips are still growing larger. I have some the size of soccer balls.
