Hot spot??

Would liek to hear what you guys thing grin.gif So I've mentioned a few times before about the stand i'veb ene hunting mostly, due to the wind, is on an old logging trail with rubs on some trees about 15 yards to my right. To my left is a Hemlock swamp the deer bed in. The stand is about 150-200 yards in from a cut corn field and when you walk in on the logging trail, there is a hemlock tree with a massive scrape under it. this is the scrape I've been talking about that when I walk in, it looks like it was done in the last 12-24 hours, and when I've walked out at night, it has been done while I was in the stand - that is how hot this scrape is and even Andy last night said he's never seen a bigger scrape. Well since this buck likes hitting that scrape and doesn't come down the trail to wherem y stand is, he moved the one climber from a different spot to about 10 yards from the scrape so I can catch this guy coming to his scrape. I think he comes off the hill. andy thinks this is a dominat buck since the rubs where there early and this scrape is being checked so often. What do you guys think? Do you think I've got a decent buck on my hands or just an average deer? Of course no matter what the size, if he comes in, he's going to be ambushed by me,lol. Will have a great wind tonight and with the cold temps., should have some action.

Re: Hot spot??

It is hard to really know by the size of scrapes and rubs and tracks even, just how big a deer really is. I would say sit tight and you should see him. The spot sounds great, ten yards is close, where you safety harness and get high and out of his line of sight, especially if he is coming off of a hill, becuase you will be eye level with him at some point no matter how high you get. Good luck and go get him.

Re: Hot spot??

I would think that by the size of a scape you describe it is getting worked by more than one buck. There's really no way to know how big the buck(s) are that are working it either unless they leave tracks in it. I found a big scrape last year about the size of the hood on a car and put a trail cam on it. I got pictures of 4 different bucks working that scape but they were all at night.

Big rubs on trees at least the size of my wrist means a mature buck to me but trees rubbed any smaller than that could be any size buck. The size of a scrape really dosen't tell me anything about the size of a buck working it unless a very big track was left in it or a tree larger than my wrist is rubbed close to it. If the scrape is getting worked while your on another stand you might as well set up to see what is working the scrape.
