FSU_Seminole
Sit all day? I've never done it before but this year I'm going to. I usually get to my stand an hour before sunrise & I sit until about 10 a.m. I've read countless books & articles about guys sitting all day in places like Canada with great success. I was just wondering how many of you sit in your stand from sun up until sun down? If you have done this, have you taken any deer during the middle of the day? What do you guys take to snack on & how do you relieve yourself in the woods?.
wtnhunt
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Have never sat all day, usually come back to the house feed our animals mid day eat lunch and then head back out. As far as relieving yourself, take an empty cleaned out apple juice jug, makes a great urinal. Snacks, I usually take chewy chocolate chip granola bars or something that is not going to have an offensive odor.
NY_Bowhunter14
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... opening day of gyn is when i usually stay out the longest... from about 45 mintes till first light to noon, then 1:30-2pm till nightfall
buckbuster11
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I do on occasion. Depends on the weather and what kind of action I am seeing....and also whether or not I have to work or not. It can definately be worth it. 2 years ago I almost nailed a big boy at 11:55 am and just missed a chance at another one around 1:45 the same day. If I'm going to stay all day I'll just take a couple sandwiches and maybe a granola bar or something..nothing big.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I just can't sit all day.I would love to,but a herniated disc in my back won't let me.About 4 hours per sitting is my limit.I have went out late, about 10 a.m., and sat until 2 or 3 in the afternoon a few times, but never really had much action. vagobbln
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I've stayed on stand all day on occasion, but boy it can wear you out. I think at a certain point you kinda lose your edge. I love to hunt the middle of the day though, especially during the rut. What I've done in recent year's is after, say three or four days straight of getting up "before the roosters", is sleep in and then still hunt into my stand around mid-morning. I've crossed paths with a lot of deer doing that.
TOMSD5
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... i've done it but man it's rough to do...i do at times go out at 10:00 and hunt till around 2-3...have taken some bucks that way ...but only during the rut... Buckslayer
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I don't usually do it until the rut. Then and in rifle season if there sounds like a lot of action nearby, I'll stay up. I always pack a lot of lunch when I'm rifle hunting, just in case I want to stay up there. It does nearly drive you crazy sometimes you space out so bad that time just melts away... I kinda like it, but I don't think I'm too focused on deer when that happens ! Tominator
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Sure have. You have to be prepared with food and water, and comfortable, but yeah, I've done it a few times. If you're seeing deer, it's pretty fun. starbux
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I do every year. I have off Nov. 3-20 and will sit all day until I get my first buck.(assuming I get one) In years past, I have had limited days off so this year will be nice. I usually take a day off after I get one to take a break and debone the deer. The spots I rut hunt in are nearly impossible to get into and out of during daylight hours without educating the deer I'm after. If necessary I nap from 9-10am and again from 2-3pm. My Goliath is perfect for that. I take a backpack with plenty of snacks, sandwich's, and water. Gatorade bottles work well for 'refilling'. The family life will take a hit those 2 weeks. Guest lostiniowa
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... i usually stay all day about 2 times a year. but only when they are really moving.. i have a buddy that has killed 2 wall hangers in the past 4 years from 11:00-2:00.. he occasionally passes on the morning hunt and just hunts mid day.. Strut10
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... Used to. Now, my lower back is being kind to let me sit for an hour. In years past, I'd take a lunch, a water bottle and a "potty bottle" and stay from before kin 'til after cain't. Generally, when the chase was hot & heavy, you could count on seeing deer every hour of the day.
SE_KSBowhunter
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... I try to hunt all day during the rut when I can. I have taken my biggest buck at 10:30 am after rattling during the peak of the rut. It is tough, but helps if your are seeing activity all day. nutz4bucks
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... I'll will go into the stand about an hour after sunrise and sit the rest of the day reason being is the bucks normally bed down from a long night out chasing and get up around 8 and start again chasing another reason is for me is don't like chasing the does away in the dark thier my best bet when it's good
Guest kybuster
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you.......... i do every year when the rut kicks in,last year openin day i killed my 8 pointer at 1 o'clock, sit all day man it pays off
Rhino
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Yep but I reserve those all day hunts for the rut. They can get tiring, especially if the action is slow. If deer are moving a lot the day seems to go by pretty fast. You have to go prepared with food and water. As far a relief I take a couple of pee bottles and always keep TP in a zip lock bag in my pack for emergencies and tracking purposes but hardly ever have one of those emergency calls during the day. Yep I've killed some deer during the mid day hours. Last year I was in Iowa just videoing and videoed a 180 class NT during the middle of the day, twice. Once around 12:30 and then again about 1:15. The 2nd time he was inside the 25 yard line. If I had drawn an Iowa tag last year he'd be on the wall now. On that particular day I saw far more deer between 11:30 and 3:00 than I did any other time of the day. Probably the most important thing is to have a very comfortable stand. Without one of those, I couldn't do it. Also at times if I'm not seeing much off of one stand I'll move right to another stand to hang in there all day. A change of scenery on a slow day sure helps to keep me in the woods. You have to remember, during the rut it can happen any time of the day. FSU_Seminole
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Thanks for the info guys. I've been mentally preparing myself to sit all day. We've got a full moon the first weekend of Nov. Nov 4th. I plan to place a couple of scent wicks out & just sit all day. I just bought one of those world band radios with an ear piece. I'll be able to listen to a number of college football games in one ear & listen out with my other ear. Actually I'm going to try an all day sit on Nov 4th & Nov 18th. A full moon & a completely dark moon. Again thanks for the info from everyone. Stinger-Hunter
Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Depends on the moon. I try to, but seldom make it. if there are a lot of deer moving and see alot in the morning, then it is easier to stay from 10:30-2:30 but those are usually the dull times. Productive sometimes, but dull usually.
