Guest BJDeerHunter
I shot this over a week ago now, but I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to post it here yet. Posted it on a couple other sites though, but finally posted here as well. The Story: My opening day of bow season was Oct 14th and my luck was real good. I was sitting out in my stand for only about 2 hours when I saw the first and only deer. I saw right away that it was a buck, just couldn't tell how big because it was kinda far away. But I got out my binocs and could tell it was at least a 6 pointer. I was sitting on the South side of a field, half of which was corn. I then saw this buck come out somewhere at the East end and watched him go around the East, West, and North edges checking scraps and eating some apples on the way. He finally turned and came down the South side I had my ladder stand in. He came right down to me and gave me a nice 11yrd, slightly quartering away shot on him. But I actually ended up hitting him in front of the should bone, hitting an aterey. Because I saw lots of blood where I shot him and where he stood for a couple minutes after, I thought that I had really hit him in the heart, but I didn't get any heart or lungs. I then waited about an hour, and then went down to where I saw him go into the woods. But as soon as I got close to the woods he jumped up and ran straight into the woods. I then let him sit for about another hour, but had to go find him as it started snowing again and didn't want to loose the blood trail. So I hurried up, got back out there, and found him just into the woods about 50 yards, so he only went about 125yrds from where I first shot him. Now we got him all cut up and in the freezer. Should be some good eating and a decent rack too. The backstraps were excellent and we had some Italian seasoned burger the other night. Ended up to be a 7 pointer with a tine broken off that is barely enough for a point. This was the only good picture we got, but I ended up moving. I guess we were too excited (or something) to really get a great picture of it. But I am going to try doing a european skull mount myself, which I will get pictures of when it's done. I found some info on the Internet about it and Dad knows someone at work who is into taxadermy. It doesn't look too hard to do, just takes a lot of time to clean the skull up.
