Sunday Hunting

Hi guys, I don't know if this has been posted before or not, but what do you think of gun hunting on Sundays?

I was raised that sundays was a day for church and family.

My province has made it legal to hunt on Sundays starting this year and they are facing some opposition. Where do I place my support? While I feel for the guy who has a hard time getting out to hunt the other six days of the week, I also feel that gradually they are making Sunday into just another day of the week! Just wondered what the feelings were out there about this?

Re: Sunday Hunting

Hey........it's coming down to governments letting gays get married. So why not make Sunday hunting legal? It's not legal, here in PA (neither of 'em grin.gif). But the push is big and growing. What I see coming is closing of private land en masse. I personally know of several thousand acres of private land that's open to anyone who'll ask permission. Most of that will be closed 7 days a week if Sunday hunting is legalized. There's a lot more "old fashioned" values hereabouts than one might imagine. I come from a family where my grandparents were dairy farmers. The only thing that was done on Sunday was milking (you can't not) and church going. Sunday's meals were prepared on Saturday. There's still a good deal of that left around here. So, if folks think public land is crowded & devoid of deer now....................watch what your wishing for, 'cause you just may get it. wink.gif

Re: Sunday Hunting

Here...hunting is legal on Sunday...

Car dealerships cannot be open on Sunday.

From a "lesser of two evils" perspective on God's day, I like the way we do it here...LOL

Seriously though...I have no problem with hunting on Sundays. From a legal perspective, there is no reason to disallow it.

I really doubt that it will result in more crowding---but think the opposite in that the same people will still hunt--but may go out on Sunday instead of Saturday thus lowering the number of people on public land on any given weekend day.

Re: Sunday Hunting

we had it then they voted it down. It was on PRIVATE land only, and you had to have seperate permission written for hunting on sunday. It just dosent' seem right, you cannot say god in school or celebrate christmas in public now...ex...Winter holiday/break, but the government tells us we cannot hunt on sunday because of religous activities....something just isn't right about that. Not everyone goes to church, and not everyone gets days of the week to hunt.

Re: Sunday Hunting

My personal opinion is that it should be legal in PA and all states for that matter. God said to rest on the sabbath... Well I'd prefer to do my resting in a tree -- with a bow or gun in my arms! grin.gif Thats the best way I can relax and I don't consider it work at all... no different than fishing which you can do on sunday in PA... JMHO

There's no better way to experience and see God's glory than being in the woods watching the sun come up. I'll take that over any sermon from any priest/pastor anyday. They couldnt tell me anything about God that I couldnt see being out in the natural world he created. Of course that's just me.

Re: Sunday Hunting

I think theres a bigger picture to look at then the religous one.The arguent seems to come down to to 2 sides, the hunters perspective and the landowners perspective.A lot of landowners that let people in as Strut pointed out have people on there property 6 days a week already, and a lot of them being farmers are very busy in the fall.Sunday for them might be the only day they have out of the fields to spend with thier family, friends or whatever.Id imagine having people driving in and out, shooting guns and knocking on the door would be quite disruptfull to them.

On the other hand a lot of hunters also work 5 or 6 days a week and only have one or two days to hunt.If they dont own property or have access to public ground as many dont they rely on the good nature of these landowners to let them in.

Personally I think its something that could be worked out between the landowner and hunter without having it mandated by the state. In a lot of cases these guys own land thats not connected to the house and can be accessed without bothering them.If they dont want you hunting Sundays for religous, personal reasons then a hunter should be able to respect that.If a hunters a dedicated chuch going man he will be in church regardless of this law.

I couldn't agree more! I think it would work out just fine! - - I know I've made it to church all but a couple sundays in my life, due to sickness or whatever, and I'll continue to be there for the rest of my life regardless of whether I'm hunting before or after! grin.gif

On the landowners side, we have a private farm open to public, its 175 acres. My uncle is the owner, and he said he wouldn't even notice. He goes about his usual business on saturday when the 6 of us are out hunting, and he doesn't see how it'd be much different on a sunday. Maybe if there are like 30 hunters hunting your land, and they all enter through your driveway -- but that can be limited by the landowner all he'd have to do is say out of respect could you please not hunt my land on sunday, and 99.9% of hunters would oblige and say no problem...

Re: Sunday Hunting

It's definetely a delicate issue. Personally my hunting group that is mostly family with a couple of my buddies that join in, have decided to not hunt on Sunday. My one friend questioned our decision, but is going to honour our choice and not hunt either!

Some of the guys I work with don't understand my view at all, and I was thinking about asking my pastor his thoughts. I have refrained from taking jobs that would require working on Sundays, and felt it was a sad day when they opened up Sunday shopping here about 14 years ago! To me it has led to the gradual deteriation of family life that I see today. So many Mom and dads work weekends, and these were the time alot of families spent together when I was young! Do we really need that extra day for hunting are some things not more important? I understand it is personal choice, just don't know if I can support it or not?

Re: Sunday Hunting

This subject has come up so many times., Usually we hear the flip side of people in states where Sunday hunting is not allowed. Sunday hunting has been allowed here forever I guess. I hunt Sundays. Think it is up to each individual to determine for himself if he or she wishes to go to church.

Hunting on Sundays for someone who has faith will not keep them from having their mind or heart in the right place. Not having hunting allowed on Sundays will not encourage someone with no faith to turn to God.

Re: Sunday Hunting

By the time I get home from work each day, I have no time to hunt. Saturdays I try to get out, but if I have other things going on, Sunday would be a nice alternative so I could at least go every week. I am recently out of college, where I hunted 3-4 times per week... Now in the real world, and missing some free time. I would like the flexibility to schedule some hunting time each weekend... I totally understand everyone elses point of view here too. We'll just wait and see what happens in the future I guess.

I think it should be legal...but i would never go, unless it was after church. I agree, Sunday is God's day. But i guess we all have our choice confused.gif

My opinion exactly. I have skipped church a few times to hunt and have never even seen a deer on those days. One Sunday last year they cancelled evening sevices and I went hunting and shot the biggest deer of my life.

I think it's Gods way of telling me not to skip church to hunt.

If you don't go to church on Sunday then it's just another day for you and you should be able to go.

It's not just another day for me. wink.gif

That tapped on dead center. To me its church. I have Sunday morning, Choir Practice at 5:00 and Church at 6:00. God promised me eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. If he wants me in Church, im there.

Personally I think everyone should be in Church but thats personally. In reality they shouldnt be able to govern that. (which they dont in Oklahoma).

Re: Sunday Hunting

I've gone hunting on sundays my whole life. It's just a matter of where you were raised. I read these posts and cannot believe some of you would have a problem with it. Frankly I can't believe there are laws that close sundays to hunting. Sounds like church and state are one in the same to me.

I respect those of you who would not hunt on sunday due to religious convictions but I would ask that you respect my decision to hunt with friends and family on sunday if I wish.

VERY well said. I only get to hunt 2 days a week, Sat and Sun, and if Sunday hunting were not legal, it would sure screw things up for people such as myself
