I fish bass tournaments year round. We have some of our biggest catches in February.

What techniques/tackle do you use in the winter? Deep water crankbaits? Worms? I had GREAT success in the spring/summer but I've never tried it in the winter. confused.gifconfused.gif

Re: Winter Fishing???

Depends on the lake and the fish. I generally fish fairly shallow even in the colder months, typically not deper than 18 - 20 feet. I know that sounds really deep for Florida waters, but it's not for the lakes around here. I throw a lot of crankbaits, jigs, and small Carolina rigged worms and lizards. I'll also fish light weight stuff like a 1/8 oz hair jig or a drop shot with a little 2 inch or 3 inch plastic grub. I like subtle, natural colors for everything except the crankbaits. I throw a lot of bright colored crankbaits.

Re: Winter Fishing???

Not a lot of river fishing in Texas. The tournaments I've fished in other states that were held on rivers were all in either the Spring or Summer. I fished the St John's out of Palatka in late January and the fish were already staged for prespawn. We caught them on the downstream ends of sandbars, behind laydowns, around docks and anyplace else where they could find a break from the current.

Crappie are cold weather fish. Just so dang hard to find. We fish the river here and caught crappie before but it was an accident. Gonna try to catch some this weekend if we can find them. We know they like to hold up in the brush tops but haven't been very successful with them. frown.gif

Re: Winter Fishing???

No winter Bass fishing here. Some excellent trout fishing in the tail waters or through the ice. If I lived in FL I would head to the Ocean. Sailfishing in Miami or Islamorada in Dec. or better yet head to Key West and fish for anything and then hit Sloppy Joe's for a round of Poppa's Doubles.

It's not that far. I have driven there from New York twice and Colorado once. Destin is a great spot as well. I caugt a boat load of snapper and grouper there. Can't remember the boat but it was out of Harbor Walk Marina.

River smallmouth and walleye during winter months for me. Sometimes they stack up and you can really get into them.

Yep! If you can find a warm water dis-charge like Brenner Island. Air temps can be way below 32 degrees, but the water temp is about 72 degrees!
