DEC has decimated the deer population in the southern tier where I hunt.

Thank car insurance companies for that one. I think sometimes that state of NY think the deer herd belongs to them and they sell you a tag to harvest their deer. I think a lot of it depends on how much money they need to raise for the next season.

There is a lot more issues and reasons why our deer heard is suffering. You cannot blame this all on the DEC and auto insurance carriers.

The recent severe winters and the launch of the new DECALS system is also to blame on this deal.

Well, while my suspicions run high, I cannot say for sure how involved the insurance companies are involved. But, as far as the involvement of the DEC, I must say that the buck stops "there". There is no question about it. They are the ones hired by us to manage the deer herd. No one else! Regardless of the problems involved, whether they are self inflicted or come outside their organization, it is still their responsibility to recognize problems, react, plan, and execute any required solutions.

While they are to be congratulated on all successes, they also must accept blame and criticism for failures. Of course the big tricky first step is to somehow get them to admit those failures. wink.gif I guess that's where we come in.

Ultimately, NY's DEC sucks. In unit 7M, I see 10 -20 doe a day and maybe one buck. And they did not offer any doe permits in theis area, goi figure!!!! All they care about is busting people for hunting crimes, not the actual quality of their deer heard!!!!

Re: all you NYer\'s

Holy Thread Diversion!!!!

To the question at hand;

True the so called second rut can indeed be better than the first - you have bucks that are "used " to getting some on a regular basis - you know, the once a year deal (I must be a buck!) - and then -BOOM- the does arent in the mood anymore. Bummer.

Then these by now sex starved boys find a few does that have come into estrus late and boy-Yahhh! It is ON!

The late rut is an excellent time to employ rattling and decoy tactics.

Good luck
