I'm MTBGirlNJ over there.

Hey TnLadyHunter, given that women are the fastest growth demo in hunting, when do you think outfitters might start making a better selection of clothing and gear for us?

Just a little venting. It drives me nuts to browse Cabelas or Bass Pro and see such slim-pickins in their women's clothing and gear offerings. Its getting better, don't get me wrong, but I would love to see more variety. Especially in the very high end category. I learned a long time ago that you buy cheap, you buy twice. So I save and go for the gusto when it comes to clothing and gear - only to find that the very nice high-end stuff only comes in men's sizes frown.gif

So I deal with sleeves and pants that are too long and be thankful I am warm, dreaming of the day when I will launch my own line of Women Specific hunting/fishing/field clothing and gear.

Re: Women Hunters are great!

Well the problem there is several small companies have did just what you said and created a line of women's clothing. They usually go under because yes there are alot of us but still not quite enough for companies that are focusing just on women. Of course I think it is almost to the point it could work. The big companies are starting to make a effort, but until now they haven't had enough to make a profit and they ain't willing to lose money over it. Believe me I have talked to companies about this and that is usually what I hear.

I don't know what to say but I wish it would change! I am totally with you on this. We need better stuff! I really need a size 5 or 5 1/2 boots and I can't ever find anything smaller than a six. That almost took a act of congress when I started hunting, but in the last few years I have had a choices. So I do believe at this years ATA show I will see more products geared to women. It is amazing how many women around me have started to be interested in hunting. If we can get enough interest they will have no choice but to pat attention!

Re: Women Hunters are great!

I have the worst time buying hunting clothes. I'm 5'9 and weigh 105 lbs. If the clothes are long enough then they are way too big. And if they somewhat fit around me then they are too short. I have resorted to making purchases in the kids department. They now make a 2XL in kids sizes. My hunting coat, pants and bibs came from the kids department. They still tend to be too big in the butt and around my legs but they fit better than men's or even the few things I've found for women. As long as it does not fall off my backside I'm fine.

Just keep looking,

Howdy yall. For the hunting clothes I as well have to go with the kids clothes, but there is no scentlock in that size so I have to get a small mens. It works for me. But I think that hunting clothes have came a long way!! I remember when it was all tree bark camo, I still remember my first hole set of tree bark it was made out of a real soft fabric I loved it!!!! It fit great to.The camo industry has came leaps and bounds from 15-20 years ago just give it a few more years and you will be able to get more of a selection of clothing for women.

Re: Women Hunters are great!

I am looking forward to better selection in terms of gear, etc. I remember my senior year in high school when I went on an Outward Bound winter survival course over Easter break, and the trouble I had finding quality gear that fit well. I ended up wearing a lot of my uncle's long underwear, waterproof outerwear, shearling hats, etc. It was an eye opener for me. Since that trip I've become a dedicated outdoorwoman in almost every sense of the word and realized that good gear in my size comes at a good price, whether I am buying "women specific" or mens sizes that work for me. I am what you might call an average sized woman, about 5'6" and average weight - too big for kids sizes and a mite too small for mens sizes.

One day, Rivers West and Sleeping Indian will make their beautiful gear in sizes to fit me. Luckily Sleeping Indian will hem anything to my specifics for a small charge. As for Rivers West, I will bide my time. The clothing is very solid (in my semi-pro opinion** see more below) but expensive, and the womens market may have to be satisfied with wearing men's sizes for the meantime.

(**My Professional Opinion is based on 10+ years of working in the outdoor gear/clothing retail sales industry. If you need to know how to 1) stay dry 2) stay warm 3) cook, camp, clean 4) sleep comfortably in any condition, I can help. Just let me know!)

Re: Women Hunters are great!

Hello everyone! New here. Had to check out how many other women hunters are out there, and it's great! I even have my daughter hooked on it. She really didn't have an interest until she was 13. At 14 she got her first deer, while sitting with me and not with her dad! ha It was a big test when I informed her I would give her step by step instructions on how to field dress her deer... after all, if she can shoot one, she will do all the other dirty work that goes along with it, or she won't hunt at all... at least not with me! She never batted an eye as she did a nice job! I'm lovin' it when we head to the woods together! anyone else getting their daughters hooked on hunting and the outdoors?

I have a 10 year old daughter that loves to hunt. From the time she could understand what hunting was she showed interest. My husband took her several times when he would go and she got hooked. She got her first buck last year with my 243 cal. rifle. And for Christmas last year she got her own deer rifle. She loves it. This year her dad took her for the youth hunt and she had a 10 point walk out 15-20 yards in front of the stand but she couldn't get a shot over the shooting rail because the deer was too close. Anyway, she really enjoys hunting and every year she gets psyched up when it gets close to season opening. We have our rifle opener here in West Tennessee opening this weekend and I plan on taking her with me. I can't wait. Just love the look on her face when one walks out on to the field. Makes it all worthwhile. Hope my 5 year old gets interested someday. Best of luck to your daughter.

Re: Women Hunters are great!

Good luck to the two (or three or four or more) of you as well. My daughter has just told me she has to work Saturday 11am to 7pm, and Sunday 9am to 5pm. That really bites. but maybe she can still go Saturday morning for a while (I would haha) since our hunting property is actually closer to work than home. Arby's. Who wants roast beef when you can have venison tenderloin?????
