Re: 12 gauge slug help

I agree with the other guys about trying other brands of slugs to find what your gun likes. I have gone to a t/c encore and will never go back to a slug gun but i did give my dad a mossberg 695. I have only used the litfields and they are great out of that gun. This year i have bought a few boxs of the new hornady sst slug . I have shot five slugs so far , the first two were to resight the gun in at 100 yards , the next three made one hole!!!! I had the gun in a very good rest at the range and man it was unbelievable. Dad will use this slug in the upcoming gun season here in central illinois . I just hope the knockdown power will be as good as the litfield, Good luck with your search .

3 of my buddies used the Lightfields last year. They had awesome entrance wounds but no exit. I've had great luck with winchester platinum tips, partition golds and the federal barnes expanders out of my rifled 835.

Re: 12 gauge slug help

Let me tell you about a little mistake I made a couple years ago!

I bought a newly introduced gun after reading several test reports on it. EVERY report I read got the best results from one particular brand of ammo. I decided to buy 4 boxes of the same ammo so I would have the same case lot etc. This turned out to be a stupid mistake. My gun positively hated that brand. I found one which worked well with a little experimenting then bought a couple boxes to have on hand.

If something revolutionary comes along I'll probably try it. In the meantime I know I have good reliable ammo to use for quite a while.

These manufacturers are apt to change components at any time. If you have a favorite this year it doesn't mean the lot you buy next year will be exactly the same. That is one reason it is so important to check your sight in every year, especially if you have bought new ammo. Even if it is supposedly the same brand etc.

This is also why I prefer to reload. I can control the ingredients better, although different powder and primer lots can vary the zero slightly.
