Ohiobucks
You're not alone.... ENGINEERING CALCULATION Problem: A backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered with 1 foot vertical spacing. Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast does the trailer with the backhoe have to be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no headwind and no braking by the driver who is oblivious of the situation . . . ) Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above . Answer: Scroll down.......... Answer - It doesn't really matter... The point is that the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge . Newarcher
Re: Not good with engineering calculations? pics I'm going to have to go with just....about.....that.....fast! Amazing how dumb some people can be. We were going through Michigan one time and I think that a large wrecker was hauling a cement mixer. Well, it didn't make the bridge either and the bulb of the mixer was knocked completely OFF and started rolling. Fortunately, it stopped soon after. That was a sight to see happen. GWSmith
Re: Not good with engineering calculations? pics Hey Tom, Have you ever questioned the difference between the second and third pictures before??? Just how does that gaurdrail stay intact in the first pic...yet in the third pic the elbow of the boom is so high??? The other question is How much Kinetic Energy does a Trac-Hoe have when fired from a trailer???

coles
Re: Not good with engineering calculations? pics looks like they bought themselves a new trailer, bridge, trachoe, and im sure the truck is pretty screwed up. the real question is how much kinetic energy does the driver have when he is fired from the company.!!!!!!!!!!! Guest bucknutt
Re: Not good with engineering calculations? pics GW, it looks like the boom went up through the bottom of the bridge, like it caught about midway and then, since the rig was moving left to right, it extended the rest of the way up through the bridge, that would explain why the trailer is completely trashed also. the bucket was out in front of the cab, the boom caught the bridge, the truck was still moving, forced the boom up through the bottom of the bridge and the trackhoe down through the trailer.
