Pinwheel5 Posted October 27, 2006 Report Share Posted October 27, 2006 I am sorry to say that while working in the deer scent aisle today one of my regular customers asked me if I had heard about the boy that got hurt. It seems that he was hunting with three friends when the homemade treestand they were hunting in fell. One of the boys hit a step in his chest and actually got hung. He has been in ICU the last three days but is going to be ok. For goodness sakes, everyone, use common sense and tie yourself in with a safety belt. And, burn any homemade stands on your property. However, you're not going to get me to burn my homemade stand. I feel safer in them than I do my manufactured hang on stands. I like them more because they are made just the way I wanted them. I will say it is a good idea to always wear a saftey harness and if you decide to make a stand, be sure to get some help if you are not experienced and take any measures to ensure safety (NO SHORTCUTS) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tony Posted October 28, 2006 Report Share Posted October 28, 2006 Re: Another tree stand accident. i agree. wear them safety belts. im glad hes going to be ok. as for home made stands. some guys can weld and some guys can build. but some cant. you better know what catagory your in before you put your life at risk. as for the wooden stand, lots of guys climb into them and never check them year to year. i have made some homemade stands, by welding them and building them out of wood and they worked very well. but i ditched them 4 years ago, because they just werent cost effective. i mean i can buy a stand for 59 bucks thats super solid and light and been stress tested. it also saves me time. bulding my own stands its cost me about 25 bucks and about 3 hours of work. i would rather spend 60 bucks and save the time, aggravation and have peace of mind. just be carefull out there. nailing boards into trees can be risky IF you do not know what your doing.. Shoot Strong Tony [/ QUOTE ] Agree, dosnt matter if your in a climber,hang-on, or homemade stand. Check every stand every time you take it out, I've seen pins break on climbers and wires on hang-ons. Make sure your tied in and check that stand before taking that last step. I've killed deer out of all the stands mentioned but always had a strap around me and i checked those stands EVERY time i climbed in. If its a hang on or a homebuilt i dont usually wear my harness. It restricts me from shooting backwards behind me with a bow. But if its gun searson, i pretty much always wear the harness. I think the only good homemade stands are ones that are not attached to trees but have posts set into the ground. You can't build a good treestand in a tree, once you nail it in place you have to remember that tree is almost moving and fatigue the nails and wood. 365 days a year that tree is moving.
