rifle shots during archery season

Been hearing shots around the area, and a bit earlier on kind of figured maybe someone was coyote hunting or something. Usually 1 or 2 shots, sometimes maybe 3. Not enough to sound like anyone really target practicing, but not always from the same places either, and most often later on in the afternoons like right before dark when the deer are moving. Seem to be hearing more rifle shots this year during the archery season, then I can recall ever hearing in seasons past.

This close to the firearms seasons opening up for deer though, I am really thinking it probably is not anyone hunting yotes where they would deer hunt. You guys think it is poaching going on or is there a logical reason I am not considering?

Re: rifle shots during archery season

Could it be squirrel hunting. Just an idea. But i have been noticing alot of rifle shots while hunting also. There is a gone range about a half mile away and we hear shots from that all the time. But these shots are coming from different places. And i know dang well it aint no .22. Alot of shotguns but i sure hope there only shooting squirrels or turkeys.

I have been hearing quite a few. Keep in mind you are in the country and it is that time of year. If they are gun hunters only, they are getting excited as can be and may just be popping off a few rounds here and there to make sure their scopes are still on or what have you. Single shots close to me would bother, that sounds more like poaching........

Some Possibilities:

Small Game Season?

Muzzleloader Season?

The shots that are the most in question for me are the ones just before dark. Most target shooters or people sighting in their rifles for the season ussually dont wait until just before last light smirk.gif

I know when you start hearing shots around here during the first week of Bow season, just before dark, it's awefully hard to believe someones punching paper mad.gif

Re: rifle shots during archery season

I have had 2 occassions last week where I heard this while on stand but the patterns were definately sight-in the rifle/ML.

I know one of the guys and KNOW he aint poaching, the other guy not so well but it was 3 shots with even time breaks and that was it.

I would be very suspicious of poaching in your case...

To be honest I would not of thought of yote hunting. LOL

Re: rifle shots during archery season

Doubt these are squirrel hunters. I can tell the difference in a .22 and a large caliber rifle, and the shots I have been hearing are not a .22.

Our first youth rifle hunt opens today and ends tomorrow.

Around here, you know the day before rifle opens. I am usually out hunting with bow the Friday before our rifle season opens, and from about mid afternoon on until just after dark you will hear the last minute guys getting their scopes sighted in or checked out. Really dont think that is what I am hearing, but could be wrong.

Yeah Gary, that is what gets me and some times I have heard just single shots, but a few times it has been more than one. People know that there is only one game warden for this entire county and he is stretched thin.

Really I first wanted to think someone was hunting yotes, but the closer it gets to the rifle opener here, the more I am doubting that is the case.

Re: rifle shots during archery season

Any crop damage tags around you william? We used to use rifles through the bow season on one piece of ground that i worked. Place had WAY to many does(we had 80 tags) buck to doe had to be 1-10. Most of our shots where 1-4 before dark. Depends if the deer stand around after the first shot. Groundhogs are another option?

Re: rifle shots during archery season

Guess it might be possible it could be crop damage permits on some of the neighboring farms Aaron. Never thought of that, and honestly not sure if any have been issued around here.

Duck hunters behind me on opening day sounds like WWIII. Definitely not shotguns or duck hunters.
