DowninWhiteys
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? I sometimes feel that way too. I just get to it and get to my stand. Don't stop for anything either. But I always tell myself there's no boogyman out there and any animals will be more afraid of me than I am of them. Do feel better when I'm in the tree, though. hoosierhunter
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? I'm more nervous about being shot than anything else. I park my truck at the neighbors house. When I got out to the truck it was very foggy and I couldn't see more than 25 yards. Well all the sudden from down the field line to muzzleloaders went off pointed at me. I immediately yelled that I was there. The two guys hunting the property came walking up saying the just shot two monster bucks in the field. Come to find out they were only 100 yards away from me. Well after a good heated debate about what is the heck they were doing shooting that late I said I would help them find the deer. They said they didn't need help but I wouldn't take no for a answer. Well we found one of them and guess what their monster buck was a button buck!!!! At that point I started in about how they mistaked a buttom buck for a monster buck...They felt pretty stupid and they should have...But anyway they very easily could have shot me b/c they didnt hit the other deer and it was a flat shot TOWARDS the house and cars!!! grrr............That's what worries me... GWSmith
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? 3 things that could help you overcome this obstacle: Limb Lights (set these up during the daylight marking a trail to your treestand) Hands Free HeadLamp Light (to easily see the trail you marked And keep your hands free) GPS (something you've practiced with before heading to the woods and have become familiar with) Something to help you "See where your going" and something to "help you get back" to where you started from...IMO are the basics to traveling in the pre-daylight. (I was going to say "In the Darkness" but with a good light, and backup batteries for it, it would not be Darkness at all)
Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? Nope. Maybe this will help. Think about what oyu are missing as the woods around you wake up. the nocturnal creatures are heading back to be or looking for some temporary cover and the cute little daytime creatures are waking up, just as you did some 45 minutes before. You get to listen to all the birds "come back to life" as well as watch the sun come up. Pending it's not a rainy day like it is here in the NE. One of my favorite things is listening to the coyotes yip and yowl.
Tetro
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? I'm the same way sometimes, then I give myself trouble, and tell myself. How many people have been attacked by animals while heading to their stands in the morning. Zero is what I've heard of. Then I remind myself that I have gun and a knife and a two way radio for back up. The sun will be up soon. Nowadays I don't usually head up to the camp alone in case I get anything. So I'm pretty much never alone.
murphy617
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? i always get that feeling in the back of my mind that something is not right.once i get a few steps in the woods the thought goes away and i just think about the hunt. tedicast
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? Nope...i'm 100% comfortable in the woods I hunt at dark. I almost always walk in 1 to 1 1/2 hours before legal shooting light. Some of my stands are a mile or more from the truck. My favorite part of the day is sitting in the stand as it starts to get light out.

Rhino
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? Nope not here either. I'm more anxious to slip in, settle in and enjoy the woods come to life as darkness slowly turns to daylight. There's only a couple of things I worry about but it's mainly during early bowseason. That's having those dang spider webs wrap around you face in the dark. Heck, you can't see them in low light either. I know it's not something that will hurt me but I've come close to hurting myself trying to knock a spider off of my face. The other is stepping on snakes in the dark. Just another early bowseason problem down here. That will give you the Don King hairdo look. It's only happened a couple of times but it's not something you ever get used to. Guest Oneida1
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? This is my first year hunting. My husband got me started. I would have never thought that someone would be scared to go into the woods in the dark. If you have scouted the area well then you know what animals are there. I hunted several times this spring for turkey and have gone many times this fall for deer. And NEVER had a second thought about it. And no my husband does not come with me. If you need it get yourself a headlamp with a green light on it, suck it up and go to your treestand. Oneida1
wtnhunt
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? Nope, the dark does not bother me. Like Rhino mentions stepping on snakes in the early season, is a bit of a concern here.
MikeB
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? I guess I've seen too many movies LOL. I usually say "The Lords Prayer" and enjoy the sound and smells on my way to the stand. Once I get there I'm fine.
Guest tunkhannockbowhunter
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? im in northeastern pa. ive been prowling these woods in the dark since i was a young boy. the only thing im afraid of is a mother bear with cubs. had one chase me up a tree once( even though youre not suppose to stand your ground), it was pretty scary, but i survived. ever since then the thought of a momma bear is always in my mind when i make those long walks to my stand at 5 in the morning, but i just think when is the last time someone got killed by a black bear.. buckee
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? There is only one piece of property I hunt, that gives me the willies walking in, in the dark. That's only because I've/we've had so many run-ins with bears in the area. The property is right along the river and when the salmon are spawning, it's a haven for black bears. I just wait until there is a little light in the sky, before sneaking in there. I never want to be in the position where I have to shoot my bow at an on-coming bear, simply because there is nothing soft to shoot at. I also carry bear spray. drkillemquick
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? about the only thing that bothers me at all is the fear of running into a skunk in the dark! sskybnd
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? the dark doesnt bother me either, i have most of my trails marked with cat eyes so i just take a slow walk through the woods, if i lived where bears are i think i would be a little uneasy, i hunted in va and never been around a bear and one morning i was going to my stand, and smelled something bad thought i was going to have to go back and take a shower, my buddy asked me that night if i seen the bear, i walked right past him he said his poop was still stemming when he came by, thats the only time ive had jetters. MUDRUNNER
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? Generally the dark doesn't bother me.I've had a few times that I've got nervous and had run ins with yotes. Two weeks ago I was heading in to my stand about an hour before sunrise.I was walking through some weeds that are about 3' tall.I left my flash light in the truck since it was a full moon and I know the area really well. All the sudden I here the weeds rustling and can see from the moonlight and the weeds that whatever it was is running right at me.It gets about 20 feet from me and starts making a noise which I thought sounded like a hog.I made some loud crazy noise at the last minute and it darts into the woods and dissapeared.Being dark and in thick weeds I have no idea what it was,but there is a hog farm about three miles up the road so it could be a ferrell hog,but I've hunted there for 4 years and never have seen one.Grandpa thinks it may have been a badger, but I've never seen one of those either. Tecumseh
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? When I first started hunting at 13 I got pretty spooked but as time went on I got better with it and now it doesn't bother me at all unless I'm in Florida I kicked up a mess of wild hogs in a palmetto thicket and all **** broke loose!!!!!!!! Man did it scare the **** out of me.
SUGARKAHNE
Re: anyone ever had this problem?? The dark doesn't bother me at all if I'm familiar with the area. The only thing I worry about is walking into a spider web, but I enjoy the walk to and from the stand.
