Success, Finally!

Although the story isn't long, there is a lot to cover: The short of it is that I moved my stand 20 yards on the other side of a very small pond only to find 25 deer beds, good browse and 3 well-used trails.

I went to Walmart to get my famous Rag of Death, which is running a record of 3/4 (Tinks 69, Code Blue, 1/2 gallon of water, 2 rags) I also got the Buck Bomb doe estrus (I really like this product now).

Dragged the area with my rags, put up some scent wicks, released the bomb and waited.

1 1/2 hours later a doe came out started feeding towards me and finally got within range. I pulled back while she was behind some branches and waited for about 45 seconds. Just before pulling the trigger, i heard a buck grunt. Bam! Spine shot, she went down and a beautiful 8 pointer took off. I didn't see him behind some branches and leaves. I'm sure he got a good scent of what he thought was a primed doe.

Here comes the bad part and some will ridicule me, but this is how hunting goes sometimes.

The doe was trying to crawl away and actually came a little closer to me. When she offered a good shot, I took it in order to end the ordeal for her. When i shot, it didn't look like I hit her. So I got down, walked up to her and shot her in the heart.

She wouldn't die. The shot was a few inches low. So I shot again higher. Still nothing. She continued to breathe.

Finally I took out my knife and that is that. but where did my second arrow go? She must have moved right when I pulled the trigger, because the nock and about 3 inches of arrow were sticking out of her snout. I already feel bad, so you don't need to comment.

I'll spare you the pics on this massacre, but I will say that the field dressing job was one of my best. The butcher is probably shaking his fist at me right now cause two broadheads are still in her, one in the spine and the other in the shoulder blade.

I'm off to MN on Thursday for Rifle Season. I will be bringing my camera so look forward to lots of posts and pics.

Sometimes those things happen. I had a spine hit on a doe earlier this year also. I don't general use a second arrow if I know she isn't going anywhere. I choose to use the knife right away and end it quick. The key is to get close enough and get your foot on the front legs. Because getting kicked sure does hurt. Good luck in MN.

how far was "in range"? i dunno, its horrible that you had to go through those measure to get your deer but you must have misjudged the yardage a fair bit? i see you are an avid member here where i am not so i dont really wanna say anything to criticize but spine shots shouldnt really be happening if you practice like you should before entering the woods, so measures like that do not have to be taken. im just big on putting a clean shot on a deer. best of luck to you this season
