I've always called them by how many total points the buck has, not by how many on each side. Is this a Southern/Northern thing? Just curious how you describe a buck. Since I'm from back east, it was hard to get used to, because I used to just say 4 point or 8 point too. I like it better now because it gives you a better visual of what the deer has. Heck a 7 pointer, could have 3 on one side and 4 on the other, or 2 on one side and 5 on the other, or even 1 on one side and 6 on the other. So if a rack had 5 "Regular Points" and 3 "Nub-Points" total... Out here a 4x4 is a 4 point buck in conversation and ask anyone from out here (west) everyone knows wht ya mean. So if I posted on here that I got a 4 point everyone would think I got a 2x2 when in truth I got a 4x4. By say 4x4, or 5x5 it just illiminates that confusion. At least I think so lol..
