Really irritated

I killed my first buck last year on November 13th. I got it to the taxidermist on the 15th and was told it should be done in about 6 months. He had probibly 50 mounts ahead of mine and I've never had it done befor, so I figured that was ok. In June when school was out I went to him to pick it up. I got a bunch of excuses why it wasn't done and was told it would be done in July. I went back in the last week of July and it still wasn't done. The guy WAS!!! a family friend, so I thought I would give him the benifit of the doubt. I've been calling him about once a month about it and he keeps telling me it's going to be two more weeks untill it's done. I called him last night and told him I would be up at Thanksgiving to pick it up. He told me that it "should be done by then unless something happens"

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENS FOR 6 MONTHS?????!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty much out of luck getting my money back. Apparently when I paid him, he owed someone else money and he gave it to them rather than buying the neccessary materials for my mount. Every time I talk to me he's got some sort of sob story why it's not done yet.

The only real recorse I can see is just wait till he's got it done and not use him again.

The only bright side to this is it seems that when he finally does get around to doing it, he is supposed to be one of the best taxidermist in the area.

OK I've vented. smirk.gif

Re: Really irritated

My guy has ABOUT a years worth of work at a time. Sometimes they will suprise you and be done a tad early sometimes, or most of the time they go over. What difference does it make as long as it is done right. I have over a dozen mounts 13 to be exact and after a while I just quit worrieing about it and I quit hassleing him and he calls me when he's done and we get along just fine. I had the first 2004 buck in his shop that year and I got it back in may. I took a December muzzleloader buck in last year and was one of the last ones. i figure Feb or March he'll say come and get it. Alot of people don't realize that the taxi can't work on any current work during the season hardly because they are spending most of their nights skinning heads and preparing capes to be shipped to the tannery and so forth. Just a few things to think about. Just chill out and wait for him to call you.

Re: Really irritated

My taxidermist is the best in the area if not the state of PA with all the awards he's won. It takes him exactly a year to do a shoulder mount. But he tells you that up front without excuses. I would say give him time you don't need it that bad and you want him to do the best work he can do and not feel rushed.

Re: Really irritated

He told me back in August that mine was the next one and and it would be done in about 3-4 weeks. I called back in 5 weeks and he said he was out of "hide glue" or something like that. It wouldn't bother me so much if he hadn't said he would be done so many times.

Born2Hunt I guess we're in a race.

Re: Really irritated

im in the same boat, I took in my grandpas buck on november 11 and he said mid summer (july). I thought that was long turn around time but then I never got a call and so I called him in october and he said he was finishing up the gun season bucks and mine would be after those. but we took our buck in before gun season and I told him that, he said that he didnt know that and started making up exscuses as to why it wasnt started yet. so I tild him that if november 11 comes around and he isnt done I want my buck back and my money back and I will take it to some one else. well see.

Re: Really irritated

Wish you the best.

I dont blame you for being upset about this. I would be to if i was told it would be done so many times. Should have just had he hasnt had time to start or what the truth is. I can see maybe once him not being done but multiple times. But thats how people are.

Re: Really irritated

There are soooo many other taxi's out there that are just like the one you describe. Sad but true. The unfortunate truth is a lot of taxidermists may be good at what they do, but are terrible business men. Many of them don't charge enough to pay the bills and can't afford to buy the supplies they need. Many others will let themselves get way behind and never catch up. I would make an attempt in recovering your head and get it to a reputable taxidermist, even if you have to ship the head. There are MANY shops out there that will do a quality job and within a reasonable amount of time. Most will have a wait of UP TO A YEAR, but if your in early it could be sooner. Good luck, Cole.

With a Story Like that, I wouldn't call Him a taxidermist.

My Taxidermist Demands a $50.00 Deposit When You Drop Off Your Head.

Pay the $300 balance when you pick it up.

Drop off by Mid December & He has them all (75 -100) Done Before Spring Turkey Season Starts.

Everyone Picks there Mount up the same Day at an open House With Door Prizes & Awards,

+ Every Head is scorded by an official P&Y or BC Scorer. smirk.gifgrin.gifwink.gif
