Guest Gamehunter
I wanted to post this comment about the online poll that has been on the front page for about 2 days now. I want to get others opinion on this subject. The poll was asking.... should hunting any wild game with dogs be illegal.. Well i am a avid deer hunter and i do stand hunt. I also dog hunt. I notice that 77 % of the people voted said yes it should be illegal. Well everybody that i talk to about it, they say that dog hunting is cheating. Well first of all dog hunting is not as easy as it sounds and any dog hunter can back me up on that. And second.. if u think that dog hunting is cheating than what do u call siting 20 ft in a tree with 200 pounds of corn on the ground in front of u. i know that there are more factors that go in to stand hunting but those same factors go in to dog hunting as well. tennswamper
Re: Dog hunting Dog hunting never was about killing to 99% of the guys I grew up hunting with. We just had fun and socialized. I hear many lies and myths spoken about it and I can only laugh. NOrmally from folks not around it or exaggerating the truth. I've never met a legal dog hunter that was a bad person. Either way, I don't do it anymore. Not because I don't think it's right, I just enjoy other aspects of deer hunting now. I do enjoy rabbit hunting with my beagles however. buckee
Re: Dog hunting Personally, I don't think dog hunting is cheating at all, and if it's done on crown land or government land (Public land), I don't see a problem with it. The only reason it is quickly becoming a thing of the past is because dogs can't read signs or understand fences, and cross into private property chasing deer. That never goes over well with the land-owners, or other hunters, who have gotten permission to hunt the private land. The last thing you/I want while sitting in your/my tree-stand or ground-blind, after getting permission to hunt a hot spot on private property, is a bunch of Yahoo run-away dogs ruining your hunt. That is the one big reason I don't like it. More, and more property is privately owned these days. It's not like it was 30 years ago, when there was all kinds of room to run the dogs, on public property. JMO
wtnhunt
Re: Dog hunting So long as the hunters respect the other hunters in the woods and keep their dogs from screwing up hunts for landowners on properties where the landowners are not hunting with dogs, I don't have a problem with them. I do have a problem with any kind of hunter who uses dogs and does not have them trained properly or will not keep up with them. I do have a problem with hunters who have no consideration for others and who let their dogs run all over a property where they know the dogs should not be. Have had beagle hounds chasing rabbits followed by large groups of idiots trespassing and ruining my deer hunting for days on several occasions. Welcome to the forums. johnf
Re: Dog hunting I have been a part of dog hunting on 4 different occations and have had probibly 10+ times in the last 5 years where dogs were coming through the private property that I hunt. I have never seen or met a dog hunter that did it legally or ethically. This is a quote from one of the other "hunters" the last time that I did it. I'll never do it again. "If it's brown, shoot it. We have our own check station"

Learning the deers habits, setting up stands to intercept .. etc. Then first morning at about 10 am you start to hear the dogs running and they cross over onto our property and kick the deer up. This really ticks me off. we have a large swamp on our property and alot of deer head here for security when the season starts. I talked to one dog handler and he basically admitted to me that they sent their dogs into "our swamp' to kick the deer over to their property. They don't trespass on our property, yet they have no problem running their dogs through it to get the deer moving! Very annoying! The other part I don't like about these guys is that they just blast away at anything. The deer are going mach ten and they are blasting away at unbelievable ranges in hopes of getting "lucky" and hitting them. I know alot of deer are wounded and lost by these guys and it gets really tiring!
NEIOWAARCHER
Re: Dog hunting [ QUOTE ] The poll was asking.... should hunting any wild game with dogs be illegal.. [/ QUOTE ] You better check the past polls section. It asked about hunting for deer with dogs. Not any game.
Guest hunter101
Re: Dog hunting well i personally love huting with dogs and we use 2 beagles. the dogs dont have the deer moving fast at all partially because the dogs are a little over wait...lol. well and i yet to be on a hunt were we shot a deer and didnt recover it. i am not saying this doesnt happen. i think there is also alot involved in knowing where the deer are and how the deer are going to go when they are pushed out. dont get me worng i am a bow hunter too and i do spend those lonly days out in the tree and i love it to but i just love getting to my watch in the cold morning and hearing them beagles fire up way down from me and hearing them geting closer and the anticpation of something liek that is unbellivable you are always on your toes. Guest silverbullet
Re: Dog hunting I do enjoy dog hunting and still hunting also. I think that many hunters have the wrong impression of this. Many hunters think of it as road hunting because some yahoos seem to stay on county roads instead of in the woods wear they belong. On my lease they use dogs practically every day of rifle season. I do enjoy still hunting in the morning and evenings but I will grab my shotgun and hit the old logging roads to change it up a little in the middle of the day Depending on the deer movement. Dog hunting goes back along time where I hunt and I do enjoy the change of pace. I think as long as you can get the hunters to stay on there own property and turn the dogs or catch them before they go on somebody elses land it should stay legal. It is fast becoming a lost art in my opinion.
Guest TnLadyhunter
Re: Dog hunting Well I enjoy it all, as long as it is legal in your area have at it! I think we hunters should stick together and not disagree, it is only giving anti hunters a reason to hammer on us more. In my opinion if it is a form of hunting I love it!
