I need a gate

Re: I need a gate

Id stick with just the standard pipe gate. We have farm supply stores all over down here but I know most of the feed stores can order them in too.

I hung two 12' gates on my property. I payed something like $59 each for them. Any gate welded will hold up really well but will be HEAVY and will eventually cause the post to sag unless you keep a block or something under the swing end of the gate.

I know the Lowe's down here sale the pipe gates. If they can sale them im sure those up there can order them in.

Re: I need a gate

I think you should build your own...a little mortar and a sign and you'll be ready to go. I made up a small drawing of the way it should look after your done. I'll send you the plans if your really interested...LOL

Down below is a picture of the finished product...and you can cut costs by not using fireworks...probably spook the deer less too grin.gif

Re: I need a gate

Tie orange flagging tape to your cable that you already have. Hang an orange sign in the middle that says DANGER CABLE GATE! snowmobilers will see it. Cheap but effective.

If not, use an auger to drill four post holes and set in some fence posts. Gravel pack the two outside posts so their permanent but leave the two centre posts so they are removable. Take them out when you drive in and replace them when you leave. Just a thought. Hope this helps!

Re: I need a gate

I put up a nice steel gate I made out of the scrap from my welded box stand materials. Basically an side ways "L" with a support running up at a 45* angle.

4"x4" steel posts cement into the ground 20' apart and 2 "L" sections that met and was lockable in the middle. Painted white (all I had at the time) with orange survey tape hanging.

Plus a posted sign stapled to wooden boards on each side.

The farmers kid who was cutting the field this summer wrecked one side by clipping it while it was wide open and bending it in 1/2 with the rear tractor tire. This also uprooted one of the cemented post it was attached to. The gate both had cedar post to attach to while open so they would not swing closed, but the kid obviously did not secure the gates open.

Trying to get every blade of grass evidentally.

I am now using an old heavy cable (1" thick) I actually found right there that summer. The old cable (3/8") that was beening used before I built my gate is going from one post to a tree to prevent pass arounds. The other side has to deep a ditch to drive threw,

So far just the cables with orange tape has worked well. I decide not to fix or even mess with a gate since the cables seem to be working well.

Oh BTW they never called me or offered to pay for or repair the gate section. I could of repaired it easily but did not both since the cables are working.

I assume the farmers kid nevr told dad about this. I know the guy and he's "good folks" and my father-in-laws good friend.

Since I have zero money in it and very little time I did not push the issue, but it did piss me off.. LOL
