Newarcher
Hey all, If you will remember, I posted a few posts about my son who was having trouble in school and conduct issues. I was at my wits end and had contacted a therapist to get him evaluated for ADD/ADHD. My son has Asthma and has to take a maintenance dose of Singulair. No problem, the doctor said it had few if any side effects and no serious side effects. I was out googling ADHD and just happened across a blurb about Singulair and it struck me. I found several sites that list ADHD symptoms, hyperactivity, meanness, stress, aggressiveness, etc. as side effects that no one (especially the drug's manufacturer) consider true. However, when you see posts like "son was an angel and we put him on that medication and he began hitting, being aggressive, having serious nightmares, etc., took him off the Singulair and he came almost immediately right back to normal". There are tons of them out there. The striking thing is that several people posted out there that their kids called themselves idiots and said that they wished they were never born or that they would die while on this medication. Both things my son did but we never correlated it to the medication. My son also is keenly aware of his behavior problems but was unable to stop acting that way. He would go into fits of tears and say "I can't stop...I can't handle the pressure (parents and teachers)....I know I shouldn't do these things but I do anyway". Anyway, after getting ahold of these sites and seeing the common side effects that are extremely causal, we took my son off Singulair as of last Friday. We noticed an almost immediate lessening of the tension, a better atttitude, and being more tolerant of his sister, less screaming and crying fits. We thought that maybe, just maybe we were looking too hard for improvement. He got one check for needs to control himself on Monday. He hasn't had a single check yet and his teacher wrote "much better week this week". I don't want to declare it so because he might relapse next week...but I don't think so. I think it was too similar to tens of stories I read on the net. The problems probably would be worse but many of the kids taking it haven't started school just yet. School seems to bring out the problems from the drug because of the attention span necessary and the availability of conflict with other students. I hesitate to be too postitive but my sweet boy seems to be returning and the demon is going back. If your child is on this medication or you know someone whose child is, BEWARE. It works well for allergies and controlling asthma, but there are some really serious side effects POSSIBLE with this stuff. Too common a story to be coincidence. If there was another cause, ADHD or ADD or that the child was just plain evil (), it wouldn't stop almost immediatly after discontinuing use. Let's let everyone impacted know. This isn't a side effect free medication as it is touted. New
