hello all i shot a very nice heavy 8 point tonight but it was a high hit in the back above the leg arrow did stick and broke off once he ran through the brush expandable broadhead i am assuming stayed in him the only time he ran was right after i shot him and that was about 15-20 yards after that he just kinda walked slowly off. i had somewhat of a blood trail but i figured i would let him lay and hopefully find him in the am it looked to me that he bedded down in a corn patch which is where he was heading on his way in he jumped a doe but he did not follow it which leads me to believe he is hurting the arrow only penetrated about 5 inches though. what are my chances i will find him??? any info is greatly appreciated thanks!!!

Re: HELP!!! shot a buck today high back will he die???

I hit a doe earlier this year about 5" down from the top of her back. I got some very red blood. Most of it was just a few drops and there were about 4-5 good little puddles. We tracked her for 3 hours about 1.5-2 miles and lost the trail. One of the guys went out the next day and never found her. He lived about 300 yards from where we lost the blood trail and never found a carcus nor did he see any buzzards. We figure she lived.

I would go out in the morning where you think he was and start tracking. If mine had been another 2" lower I probibly would have recoverd her. Hopefully yours was.

You did the right thing by backing off until morning.

When you go in in the morning, still-hunt your way along while following the blood. Just take your sweet time, and don't make any noise. Be ready to finish him off, if neccessary....and good luck.

Like someone already said, there are a lot of arteries and veins to cut, so you never know, until all is said and done. wink.gif

Re: HELP!!! shot a buck today high back will he die???

well i got up 6:45 and looked for over an hor with no luck however later in the day towards sunset while working on my garage i noticed a buck up on the hill where i saw him last chasing a few does around and he had a slight limp to him so i am assuming that was him it sure looked like him but is there a chance he will eventually die from infection or gangherine?

Yes, there is still a chance he'll die.

I fiund a deer once 3 days after he was wounded. He was in pretty bad shape, but still alive, When I finished him off with an arrow, he just stood up, walked a few paces and collapsed. I don't think he would have lasted another day or two.

I was glad I found him.

Re: HELP!!! shot a buck today high back will he die???

Have you spent any time analyzing why your shot went where it went? I know there are a whole bunch of reasons why we don't stick an arrow exactly where we intended, and a few of them are unavoidable. On the other hand there is usually something to be learned when these things happen so that we don't turn around and repeat the same thing another time.

I know that probably most high hits occur when the deer starts to escape. I know that there are also a lot of shooting scenarios that are never encountered in practice sessions that can also cause unhappy and unexpected surprises. Heavy clothing is one of them. Failure to practice at extremely close ranges is another that end unhappily. Misjudged distances may point up the need for a rangefinder or better use of a rangefinder. The list goes on and on, but it is always good to learn or at least try to learn from hunting situations that have gone bad.
