what would you do

You are hunting with a ml with perfect conditions. What light wind there is, is at your face, and there is a good frost.

The past couple weeks you have seen a really good buck twice, a nice typical 10 pointer, both times he has been with the same 4 pointer. You have a young doe to your left feeding on acorns then you have the same 4 pointer come out and walk out in the field in front of you right now and can hear movement in the woods, but cannot see what it is. The 4 pointer makes his way across your field and you can see him watching something down the hill. You are thinking it might be the big 10 back off to your left still in the woods. Then you see a yote pop out at the back of the field where the 4 pointer had been watching. The yote chases the buck, turns and comes back into the field. You are still hearing movement in the woods and got the doe still back behind you feeding on acorns oblivious to the presence of the yote due to the terrain. The yote gets as close as 125 yards, and offers a few good shots, do you take him and risk blowing the hunt for the good buck you think is lurking just in the edge of the woods or do you hold out for the buck?

Re: what would you do

I too would hold tight and watch what happens.

Many things could transpire.

The yote may wander off, or chase the doe. The buck may then come out.

However...

The buck may not come out of the yote is or had been there.

I would not shoot at the yote until I was sure no buck will appear or if its really doggin a deer.

Good senierio..

Re: what would you do

I'd shoot the dog twice. We are all eternal optimists and always are hoping the big one is right around the corner. Wishful thinking is what keeps many hunters from killing does and managing the heard. we don't want to kill the yote because the big one MIGHT get away. Killing the coyote will manage the fawn kill in the spring. Since the buck ultimately didn't show, the right choice was to kill the yote.

No question, its hard to do it and potentially wreck your deer hunt for the day, but the deer will be back and you'll have one less rat in the woods.

Re: what would you do

I had this same problem, but with a little different twist. It was youth weekend and I had taken my son hunting, hoping to get him his first deer. Well we saw 4 coyotes that morning................one in range and I feel the other 3 could have been called in pretty easily. For those of you that don't know me I would rather hunt predators than anything else, but I still love to hunt deer. Now Danbo pretty well sums it up in his reply. Taking out the yote is a big part of managing the deer herd for years to come. My situation was different in that it was MY SON'S hunt and it was his choice to wait to see if we would see a deer. Had it been MY hunt...................dead coyotes!!!!!!

Theres no right or wrong answer to your question, just a matter of preference for each hunter. I hope you get a shot at the big buck this season.

After season I suggest doing what you can to take out as many coyotes as you can to help the deer, turkey, upland game birds and whatever else you like to hunt in the area.

Re: what would you do

I have killed several coyotes here over the years, while deer hunting during the rifle season, and have even killed a few outside of the deer seasons, have shot a few out the back door of the house.

I have attempted to call yotes and hunt them in the off season, but have had no luck. Admittedly I stink at calling them. Best luck I have had with calling yotes has been when turkey hunting with a hen call and using the can call as a fawn distress call.
