Carry gun

I've been thinking about getting a CC gun, but really haven't made up my mind yet on anything.

I'm small stature 5'6" and 180lbs, so I don't want something very big. I don't like the little glock. It's to fat for my hand, and the mag doensn't feel long enough to hold on to. I held one of the taurus meliniums (sp?) and liked the way it felt and liked the sights. It seems like someone on here has one. If you do, how do you like it?

Also what caliber? Do i really need to worry about performance on these things? Is someone going to know the difference when you shoot them? I'm thinking probibly 9mm or 40 just because of ammo prices and avaliblity, but the Super 38 and 357sig look really good ballistically.

Thoughts?

Re: Carry gun

Why not a wheel gun? My favorite CCW is my S&W 640 in .357 Mag.

Yeah, performance should be high on the list. If you happen to need to use it, you need to stop the attacker now, not slow them down, stop them. Adrenaline is flowing for them as much as you, so they may not even notice a hit from a low performing round. They will still be injured, but they can still inflict damage to you until they are stopped. That's why the defence classes preach shoot until the threat is stopped.

Re: Carry gun

It's better thna nothing, but there are much better choices out there. The .357 Mag, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, are all very highly rated defence cartridges.

The 9mm will work fine if you feed it the proper premium ammo. Look at how many law enforcement agancies that went away from the 9mm. As for accuracy, you will not be shooting at someone at any distance. It will be measured in feet not yards.

Re: Carry gun

Whatever you are the most accurate with is the proper choice. Look at it this way, if you shoot me once in the shoulder with a .45 and I shoot you once in the middle of the forehead with a 9mm, who walks away?

If you are serious about personal protection, find a gun that fits you and your needs and then become proficient with it. It's nice to make the big booms, but, shot placement is everything.

Although I think I see your basic point.........if you've shot an attacker in the forehead in self defense......you've "missed". Two shots center mass.......then maybe the head.

That being said........I agree with being able to shoot your CCW accurately. But if you're going to carry.....get a weapon that is suitable for the task and become proficient with it. Don't carry half a gun and feel safe because you are good with it. There are LOTS of guns with plenty of oomph for the job which are very, very shootable by anyone. The 9mm is what I'd consider the bare minimum caliber for a CCW. And if you can tolerate a 9mm, chances are, you will have no issues at all with a .357 mag, .357 Sig, .40 S&W or .45. There's not a huge difference in recoil between all of them in a good fitting gun.

If you're gonna carry a gun to stop a fight........carry a gun that will stop a fight. wink.gif

Re: Carry gun

i'd look at the steyrs, xd's and glocks. there are even compact 1911s that are fairly small.

if you can shoot a 9mm but don't like the .40 or .357Sig - try getting some hogue grips. there are also sleeves that slide over some of the composite frame guns - they put a nice feel on the guns - sometimes the composite feels a little slick and hard to hold.

Re: Carry gun

So then my Walther .380 PPK's would be considered to small for CC? Thats why I bought this gun! I can hide it anywhere! Under the shoulder, hip, pocket, or my ankle! I love this little rocket for CC! Sure its no .45 ACP! But I can shoot this little gun pretty darn good out to 25 yards! I have fed it enough ammo, to know what I can do with it! Yes I would love a compact S&W .40. If I were to buy another handgun that would be it!

Re: Carry gun

Funny you should put it that way Strut10. I just got my wife a tarus pt-22 in stainless. It's the one with the flip top barrel like the Beretta 21A. The guy at the gun shop said it wasn't nearly the gun that I got for her last year.(the 38 wheel gun)

My response. "a gun she won't shoot or carry is a lot more useless than a little one that she will".

"Yeah, yeah you're right there" his response.

Re: Carry gun

Been there, John.

My Mrs. used to carry my Glock 27. It was a bit fat for her hand and the slide a little stout for her to rack. More often than I liked, she'd not have it with her. frown.gif Sooooooo..............for her birthday a couple years back, I got her one of those Taurus Titanium .38 snubbies. The thing weighs 12 ounces and fits her hand like a glove........... smirk.gif ........ She carries it all the time. Now that's what we're talkin' about. wink.gif

Re: Carry gun

Im jumping on the shot placement band wagon. I had a .40S&W sigma. It was a hand cannon due to weight. I enjoyed it a lot but wasnt the most accurate with it.

However, hand me a cheap Ruger P89 (9mm) and I can center several shots with ease. Ive also had so much fun with my Walther P22 that I thought about buying another in the shorter version. Granted I could take the barrel down on this one easily but I already have one in black... Now I need one in Green! grin.gif

It is interesting that you say that because the other day I was showing my mom my auto and she was having issues with the slide.

I guess it is important to take that into consideration when purchasing a pistol.

So if I were going to take this out as a back up hunting pistol, what would I want 40 or 45 shooting a 4" barrel?

[/ QUOTE ]

Neither.........unless you were just going to use it to "finish off" an animal (I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that you're talking deer). The only "common" auto chambering I'd even consider for big game animals (deer & bear) would be the 10MM and only to 50 yards at that.

no offense but i think either of the calibers would be more than adequate enough to hunt a deer....but you might want to check your state regulations because in maryland a 4" barrel is not enough....gotta be atleast 6

Re: Carry gun

In Arknasas it's 4". What I'm talking about is for a finishing off gun, which a 22lr would be enough, although not legal. I would also use it in close quarters where moving my rifle might spook game like 15 yards or less. I had a buck come 5 yards from me a few years back and couldn't move my gun. A pistol would have been handy at the time.

Does anyone have experience with the taurus melinium? That one has felt the best in my hands so far and I'm thinking either 40 or 45 ACP.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have a Taurus PT111 millenium (9mm). This gun is great to carry because it fits my hand well but don't plan on shooting sub MOA with it at more than 6 feet. It is anything but a shooter but it does make a lot of noise. I want to try the Taurus 24/7 in .40cal.
