Guest BaerBucks18
My buddy hit a really big 11-pointer this morning...the deer was about 16/17 yards away, quartering away from him....the arrow only went in like 5 inches, he couldnt tell where exactly he hit it but after the buck took like 3 steps the arrow fell out right away he ran up hill about 50 yards or so and then kinda fell over but then got back up and slowly walked away......we gave him about 6 hours.....we followed a pretty good blood trail for about 200 yards....there was alot of really white hair where the deer was standing when he shot him, and the blood was a little darker colored and kinda thick as well, we found alot of bubbles in some of the blood which made us think a lung shot or maybe just clipped a lung.............but we never found the buck and the blood trail ended after that 200 yards, so we walked around for a few hours just looking for the body.........what does everybody think happened cause we were kinda confused????? is he dead or alive? arrow32
Re: confused, is he dead or not? I think leaving him lay longer would have been good. But 5 inches how much was he quartering?? Id go back tomorrow morning or evening. Might find him im not sure how far that would go. If you got one lung he'd go down at some point. Guest wally76
Re: confused, is he dead or not? yea, i was alittle confused by the let em be comment too, I think you clipped one lung and it's sometimes amazing how far they can go on a one lunger shot. If there was bubbles in the blood you had to have a lung or wind pipe shot and in either case i think he's dead. look down hill, look near water. nutz4bucks
Re: confused, is he dead or not? let him lay over night and search in morning going to get cold he'll stiffen up GOOD LUCK KEEP US POSTED....
Tominator
Re: confused, is he dead or not? White fur tells me he's shot really low. Bubbles are kind of confusing though. That's typically lung blood. I'd keep at it. From the sounds of it, he's laying dead out there somewhere.
Bowtech_archer07
Re: confused, is he dead or not? I think he's dead somewhere. Dark blood means guts or liver and bubbly means artery or lung. Somebody I know had the same thing happen to him on Saturday night. He gut shot the deer and they found him the next day. I'd let him lay for another 6 or 8 hrs then start looking for him. Head to water if there is a constant watersource nearby and you can't follow the blood trail and start looking for him. A gutshot deer will head to water 99% of the time. Good Luck!!!!

Not to mention, waiting two or three days while its warm is going to render that meat useless. If you are only concerned with the antler's, I don't agree with that either. If you're not going to have the time to look for a wounded buck...don't go out. Not trying to sound like a jerk, just my 2 cents. I'm sure I'm not the only bowhunter out there that feels this way either.
Guest Zemmer18
Re: confused, is he dead or not? How much time would you spend looking? I know we owe it to the animal and we owe it to ourselves to be ethical but how do you determine how long you should look? Each situation is different. I had this happen to me for the 3rd straight time in 3 years. ANd I have gottne the same result. 3 nice bucks lost. It happened yesterday. Everything was perfect except the shot was high on a nice 8 point. The arrow was sticking out of him above his front right leg. After studying the deer charts on here I am convinced I hit the shoulder bone but clipped at least one lung. I knew when I didn't get a pass through, that I needed to give this animal some time. I waited 5 hours before taking up the trail. 2 hours into the trailing job the blood trail was weak and we finally lost it. We spread out and 50 yards into a Hemlock grove I picked up some blood again. It started to get heavier and more fresh. We were then on the trail of a running deer because the bright red blood with bubbles in it and some large blood clots were scattered and sprayed all over the leaves. Then the trail went back to a slow drip every 8 to 12 feet. Finally the trail seemed to end but 80 yards up a steep ridge we find more blood running along a small road on the top of that ridge. At 3pm it starts raining. We are 3 miles into this journey of ours on land that is posted and have no clue where we are and the blood finally ends. We push a 200 yard wide Hemlock grove and surrounding area looking for any sign but there is nothing. This trailing started at 11:45 am and ended at 5:30pm EST. Close to 6 hours on this deers trail and no more sign and no flags kicked up. Dropped out of the woods behind some houses and find that we are 5 to 6 miles away from the treestand by car so made the phone call to be picked up. It has been raining since 3pm yesterday afternoon so even if I did go out today it would be a blind search in the area we lost the blood trail. Wonder how many the pros have lost coming up through the ranks? A GPS arrow chip would be nice for those non pass throughs. BTW - I am going out for the last few hours of daylight tonight to search for this deer. But if he isn't found tonight, I will have to call the search off. We all make mistakes but hopefully we learn from each and everyone we make.
Guest mphockey09
Re: confused, is he dead or not? First off sunday we looked for the deer for about 6 hours, we looked all over the land that my friend owns and some of the neighbors land which it could have very well gone. We got permission to go on his land that day but since he has hunters out there morning and night usually its pretty tough because the only time we can go on his land to look is about 11-2 and I have had tests the past few days at that time. We went out this morning and looked for a few hours didnt find him, the meat is spoiled by now, but I will go out a few more times and give it a shot. muggs
Re: confused, is he dead or not? Apolgies bud. [ QUOTE ] I havent had time to get out and look yet i've been busy with class and tests in college, but I will be looking tomorrow [/ QUOTE ] Just from that quote, it didn't seem like you were to concerned, that's all. It seemed like the antlers may have been the only concern...but its hard to get everything someone is thinking through a few lines of type. That's why I added "no offense" "not trying to sound like a jerk" "just my 2 cents." I added those lines to avoid a knee-jerk reaction, but I guess that didn't exactly work. Believe me pal, I'm the last guy on these forums that's gonna try to get preachy on ya. Sounds like you did all you could. Good luck to ya.
