Guest IADEERDUDE
we just had our first season shotgun deer here in iowa, which thankfully the dnr lets you use a muzzleloader if you wish, which i did. and i tell ya all im never takin my shotgun again,i shot twice and got two deer a nice 8 pointer and a decent doe. when my uncle and a couple buddies went through a couple boxes of slugs. to me a muzzleloader is much more accurate than a shotgun when you take the time to get it dialed in. i know some of these new slug guns are pretty sweet, but to me it means more to get a deer with a loader than a shotgun. this is just my opinion, dont want to ruffle any feathers.. AJ
Re: done with shotguns I agree. In the county where I hunt, you have to use shotgun with buckshot or a ML rifle. I will take the ML out almost every time. The only time we take the scatterguns out is when we are doing drives.
Nut
Re: done with shotguns My 14 year old also prefers to use his ML during our shotgun season. I will take a shotgun once I changed to rifled barrel while hunting public lands . It is accurate and offers the second shot since most times the deer will be moving. On private lands I will take my sidelock ML . Really didnt matter this year since I only got to go out for 2 hours. What works for some doesn't work for others

[/ QUOTE ] Illinois is the same way. I went to muzzleloaders only back in 2001 and have never looked back. Used 2 of my Ml rifles to kill 4 deer this season. Just filled my last tag yesterday. lil hunter
Re: done with shotguns I only shotgun hunted one day during shotgun season. The other 5 times I took my muzzleloader. I never shot a deer though, so i'm still using my muzleloader for muzzy season.

While i "never say never", it's easy to picture the slug barrel for my 870 gathering dust over the next several years. This muzzleloading is fun! DannoBoone1
Re: done with shotguns Never had any use for them as deer guns. Came to Iowa from Nebraska and was happy when IA DNR established a ML season. Even at that, I always longed to be hunting with the .25-06 as I had back in Nebraska. That all changed last winter when I got the Savage 10ML. Rarely will I see a deer at such a range the CF would be advantageous over the Savage. There are now many a 200yd ML, with a few being effective to 300yds. The shotgun shooter may have multiple round advantages, but we now have them on effective ranges. Guest Xen
Re: done with shotguns hmm, i wouldn't be totally against trying to use a shotgun for deer, i have heard people brag about the success they have, i think the ml is more accurate and a lot more fun to shoot - if you get close enough, you can cook the deer with the muzzle blast when you shoot it, so it's like killing 2 birds with 1 stone... MUDRUNNER
Re: done with shotguns I USE BOTH A SHOTGUN AND A MUZZLELOADER.I LIKE MUZZLELOADER ONLY SEASON BECAUSE IT'S NOT OVERCROWDED AND I DO ENJOY SHOOTING THE ML.DID'T DO ANY GOOD LAST WEEKEND THOUGH.PRETTY CRUMMY WEATHER. EIGHTPOINT
Re: done with shotguns I haven't used my rifle or shotgun since buying my Encore 50 cal. The only time I take the slug gun is when I'm pushing deer . If I'm a stander I got the muzzeloader. More accurate than my slug gun.
too_pointer
Re: done with shotguns I have killed 2 nice bucks with my shotgun. It will definetely knock them down in a hurry, but I would prefer my Encore anymore. I know it is good out for a longer range, and is more fun anyways!! too_pointer
