arrow32
There have been some posts touching on this subject and magizine articles in different bowhunting articles going into this deeply. I was sitting down stairs just looking at a buck my dads killed in the past and got to thinking how much stuff we use now and are killing the same bucks they use to back then and to date this is the biggest buck he has killed. Yes these things we use like tinks grunt calls and so for help greatly but are they needed? Some of the biggest bucks and elk and other animals have been killed by guys just sitting out in the woods in a stand or on the ground with there bow a knife and the lord. Are we to the point were we cant do this. I remember my first bow hunt a few years back i was sitting there and up comes a spike. Came right to 6 yards away i was shaking so bad i couldnt even shoot. What did i have what did i use to get this deer coming in nothing. I had a bow a knife and a pair of old used camo cloths and boots. Is there a point were we go to far in what we use? To the point were we break ethics? Im not sure if we will ever cross that point or if we have this is just some thoughts. Im not trashing anything that anyone uses because i use alot of the stuff on the market also. This pretty much is talking about what the two guys in bowhunter said. Im just asking. Not sure if this makes sence but im just trying to get some thoughts out of my head. Input would be great.

Guest Finn
Re: Are we... Seems like people have more money than time these days. Being in the Air Force in NC, my Wisconsin woods time is limited. In the past, I've bought way more than I needed. For now, I use the absolute minimums, but those accessories are sure fun to try out. Ever see the movie "Tin Cup" where the lady doc had all those gadgets for golfing? That's how some guys are about hunting stuff that will cure them. 3whunt
Re: Are we... I think we use way to many gadgets... and god knows I'm included.... I think a lot of it has to do with time restraints as mentioned above.... I only get a set amount of time to hunt now that college is over and life begins.... so I try to "ensure" that I have every possible tool to help bag a trophy... I have killed a couple of nice deer in the last few years, but none were aided with any gadgets.... they were all luck if you ask me.. Doc
Re: Are we... We always seem to hope that we can buy good hunting. I do it too to a limited extent. I never thought so, but when I look at my shop, I see all kinds of gadgets and go-fasters that I felt over the years, would tip the scales in my favor. Most of them turned out to be just plain ol' junk that never got used a whole lot, but the mentality when I bought them had me convinced that each trinket would make me shoot like a pro or would fool the smartest buck into walking in and standing like a cardboard silouette while I easily put an arrow into the boiler room. All that said, I will say that there is no way that I could ever go back to the recurve and wooden arrows that I started out with (I've tried that already). So there are some fundamental equipment changes that I've made over the years that were well worth the money and have proven to increase my success. How much of that kind of stuff do you really need? Well, that's up to each individual hunter to figure out for himself. I've settled on a basic set of stuff that I believe helps me and over the past bunch of years, I have bought very little. However, even as recently as this year I bought "the can" just to experiment with. It probably won't do anything for me but I just had to find out....lol. Sometimes we buy stuff just to see if it really works.....kind of like just an interesting experiment. As long as it isn't too expensive, I'm willing to invest a little money just in the interest of "research". Doc
GWSmith
Re: Are we... [ QUOTE ] ...I'm willing to invest a little money just in the interest of "research". Doc [/ QUOTE ] LOL...Yeah thats what I tell my wife too These Gizmo's and Gadgets we have availible to us today simple did not exist before. I have no doubt that if they were affordable to hunters of days gone by that they would have used them too. We are always trying to tip the scales in our favor... From the type of comfortable treestands we buy(that allow us to stay hunting longer) to the Camo we wear which we believe helps hide us better. That is of course until some old gent drags a deer by our treestand wearing their Woolrich red plaid wool hat, jacket, and pants Do we really need all this modern gear...probably not. Though some of the advancements in technology have helped us become more efficient with what time we do have to spend while hunting.
VTbowman
Re: Are we... I "try" to not ghet sucked into buying all the gadgets but have failed as of late. LOL I have gotten away from the photorealistic camo, absolutely NO scent blocker/lok at all, started all firearms season with handguns and even went traditional for a few years for bow hunting. This year I bought all new camo (Predator brand), compound bow(Switchback XT), rilfe caliber handgun (Encore 300 WM)and ML handgun (Encore 209x50) this year. I dont use any scent to attract deer, or cover my own. I still just like to buy stuff. LOL
