98chevy
I have a new little toy its a model700 tactical rifle made bye remington. Its a .308. It has a leupold tactical scope with wind adjustment and so fourth. well i sight this thing on its on. but every time i take it to the range its off. Ill sight it in it shoots awsome go the next day its 4"s low or to the left. i adjust it and its ready. Now i carry this thing in a airport proof rifle case this thing doesnt get beat around never. But like yeaterday i was shooting golf balls at roughly 200 yards. today i go shoot its 4"s low. I cant figure it out.now when it shoots low ill shoot again and it touches the last hole. Could it be the scope. my bullets. I shoot my own reloads and i know there exact. Im lost on what to do.
Guest shotist
Re: cant keep it grouped!! It sure sounds to me like as you shoot, the barrel is heating and causing you to change your sight. Once the barrel cools, your zero has shifted. Free floating the barrel will correct this. Other possibilities: Check your action screw torque. 40-55# is very normal on the front/rear with minimal pressure on the middle screw (if there is one) is where you'll want to be in that synthetic stock. Double-check your mounting system to ensure that all is tight. The issue may be in the scope itself, but this is a slight possibility and is your last resort. VTbowman
Re: cant keep it grouped!! Sounds like something on your gun is loose. The scope seems to hold zero but maybe the mount, rings, etc have something not quite tight. That or your stock is loose too. Or both. I just went threw this last weekend. New gun and scope and was shooting 3 leaf cover groups then low, then 1 to 1.5 foot groups. (???) Found my forend screw was loose.
98chevy
Re: cant keep it grouped!! See its not that its hot once i get it zeroed in Itll shoot bad the first 2 shots i adjust it and it shoot straight the next 20. then the next day its off. 98chevy
Re: cant keep it grouped!! Yeah i mean this gun is saposed to be accurate as mess. Im going home and checking my caliber on my powder measuer. If tis off theres my problem. i reload about 10 a day well thats all i shoot. so if its putting diffrent amount it makes a huge diffrenceeven half a gram. what i could do is shoot a bullet from each day i reloaded all 100 bullets and see if they shoot diffrent if so there my problem. VTbowman
Re: cant keep it grouped!! Ohhh I did not know you reloaded. That may be your issue. Not exact reloads will do it... I mean if the gun groups super tight just not same place everytime out it has to be your loads not being exactly the same. Not that factory ammo will either but they are really not to far off lot ot lot. Not that I have seen anyways. AJ
Re: cant keep it grouped!! Are your shots in a good tight group or are they here and there like VTB mentioned? You may be getting some excessive runout in the neck/bullet seating. this will give big groups. If the group is tight and it moves around, it may be: the wind bedding issue but I suspect its in a synthetic stock shooter induced error (canting, forend placement) scope, rings, bases Try some factory ammo and see how it does. If its a 308, get a box of Federal 168 Gold Medal Match ammo and see what it does. That can eliminate the gun or ammo from the equasion. Guest shotist
Re: cant keep it grouped!! What can cause a shifting zero? Your position, your bench technique, your cheek pressure, your grip, your trigger control, the amount of pressure of the rifle in your shoulder...all must be consistent for longer precision shooting. Otherwise, check for loose optics mounting, barrel touching the stock, a bedding issue (interference or action screw torque) or a bad scope. I have had to have some factory scopes (good one's) blueprinted and cleaned before they would track properly and repeat. Even then it is a real crap shoot and you don't know for certain until you test it. But, check the other issues before looking at your optics. It has been my experience with precision long-range shooting that the shooter really needs to critique their own performance before looking at the other possibilities when it comes to a changing zero. Not what you wanted to hear likely, but there it is.
98chevy
Re: cant keep it grouped!! This is what i still cant figure out. Yes im younger then most of yall but i can shoot. I out shoot alot of people. I can shoot my styer 7mag all day at 400 yards. and group um every day perfect. or to keep it simple ill shoot it at a 100 and group them every day at a 100. I can group my other little remington .308 with a little brushbarrel like no other up to about 150. ever day those 2 are on. But this new one i cant get to stay in the same place. It doesnt move threw out the day when im shooting. I sight it in on monday and it shoots awsome im blowing golf balls away with no problem. So when i put the gun up it was dead on very happy with the way it shoots. Then i go home put it up then go to the range on tuesday and set it up ease a few shots off and yeah there goruping inside a quarter but there 4"s low. SO i adjust the scope and then im fine for the rest of the day. hope this helps but right now im gunna try diffrent bullets. everyhting is tight on the gun i checked twice. Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: cant keep it grouped!! I've been following this am I am puzzled. If you have a girlfriend/wife. Is she messing with your scope ? That would be a bad joke unless you bought it without permission? LMBO

too_pointer
Re: cant keep it grouped!! Sorry if I mised this, but what about cleaning your barrel ? Do you clean it after you get home all the time ? I just wonder if your gun doesn't shoot good out of a clean barrel, so when you go to the range, it is off with the clean barrel, and once your barrel gets fouled, it groups real fine, I don't know too_
98chevy
Re: cant keep it grouped!! No no girl freind or wife.
