Running them off????

I guess, it is safe to say that the rut is in full swing. Since last Sunday Morning, the Buck's have been hard after the doe's and we have seen much more activity.

In fact, we have seen at least 2 different 160+ bucks, and roughly 6 115-130" buck. Here is the question.

Last night, I had a 125" 8 point at 35 yards, just inside a brush line. I needed him to come about 5 more yards, for a clean shot. I hit the can once and turned him back toward me. As he stood there (just up wind), he was completely calm and engaged. A few minutes passed and he didn't move in, so I grabbed the grunt call, and blew a mature buck grunt. HE BOLTED.... gone! This is the third 2 1/2-3 1/2 year old this week, that I have run off with the grunt tube??? What gives?

Do you think they have been taking a beating from the more mature deer in the area, and are now running scarred?

I will be heading out soon, hopefully my luck will change! grin.gif

Could be their getting their butts stomped a bit.

I took off a couple inches from the end of my True Talker grunt tube to make it sound less like a mature buck...and it fits easier in my pocket wink.gif

I was thinking of doing this too.

In my area mature bucks are 2.5 yo so anything sounding bigger then that will scare them away IMO.

Luckily for me my co-worker has the saem call and plans "to make some noise" during are rifle season.

He has the saem grunt tube.

I plan to hunt escape routes away from him. LOL

Re: Running them off????

My first reaction is that buck was too close when you started calling, especially if he is standing still. At 30 yards a buck can absolutely pin the sound of a grunt down to the exact inch it originated from.

If he knows where the sound came from, and does not see any deer standing there, he is out of there. As a rule of thumb I almost never call at a deer that isnt a good 50 yards away, depending on terrain, and I even feel 50 yards can be risky at times.

2 other things I try to do.... if possible call when the deer is walking as opposed to standing still. It's much harder for them to pin down exactly where the sound is coming from when they are walking. Also, try pointing the grunt tube away from the deer when you call so it sounds farther away then it actually is.

I'll 2nd that....well said. If he's standing still looking for where the call came from, especially at 35 yards, the next move is their move...not yours. wink.gif

Good tip right there.

I've also found that my woodswise call at those close-in ranges, may relax the deer, but certainly doesn't guarantee that they will turn and come in to it.

I use it while still-hunting so I can get closer to the deer and keep it relaxed. Now all I need is a magic shooting lane grin.gif

Re: Running them off????

Good advice on not calling when their in close....a deer (other than yearlings) knows when other deer are around....the only time I'd try to call if one is in real close is to 1) stop it for a shot 2) if the cover is extremely thick or low light situation 3) desperation if I don't think I'll get another shot 4) if it's a young deer, they're fun to play with
