RangerClay
Do the legal "shooting hours" pertain to bows or is it just guns only? I'm not looking for personal opinions. I'm just curious about the law after reading a recent post. I don't bowhunt so I am curious.

GWSmith
Re: Question for bowhunters Check Page 18 of your Hunting Regulations guide for the States Definition of "Big Game Hunting Hours"...they dont specify any difference between the two...IMHO then it applys to both. I'll tell you what goes on around here...if people can see...they are shooting well after Sunset Now people may understand why I Always use a Light going to and coming out from my treestand...I dont feel like being Shot! GWSmith
Re: Question for bowhunters Here's a Website with a Sunrise/Sunset Calculator on it. Sunrsie/Sunset For example...If you wanted to know what the Sunset time for Buffalo, NY was on the 6th of this week it was 5:02pm(the end of legal shooting hours for that day in that area in New York-according to the DEC Website's Definition). If you do the calculations for that area and click submit then you get the entire calendar months figures...you'll notice that the time decreases by one minute each day. So for today the End of Legal Shooting Hours would have been @ 4:59PM.

Tominator
Re: Question for bowhunters I guess I don't understand your question. In Ohio, there's two seperate laws for legal shooting hours. One for gun, one for bow.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Question for bowhunters Here in Illinois bow hunters have 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset, but gun hunters have 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset. Not sure why there is a differance. Squirrelhunter91
Re: Question for bowhunters I usually figured that legal shooting light is when I can see my pins thru my peep. This is usually 10 minutes or so before the sun is visible. But at sunset, my pins glow until the sun disappears for good.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Question for bowhunters I use to think that to Joe,but one year I was walking out of the woods with my shotgun loaded and although it was not dark,it was 5 minutes after shooting time according to the time table, and a ranger was waiting for me at the truck...lucky for me I got a warning, and pay close attention to the chart now. GWSmith
Re: Question for bowhunters [ QUOTE ] 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset [/ QUOTE ] Otherwise known as "Civil Twilight" Civil twilight is defined when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities. Here's todays times for Syracuse, NY: Nov. 10 Twi: 6:19am Sunrise: 6:49am Sunset: 4:46pm Twi: 5:16pm

[/ QUOTE ] Same in Ohio. The rationale when they changed it a few years back was that it was safer. Less people shooting into the dark at what they thought was a deer. Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Question for bowhunters [ QUOTE ] After Civil twilight artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities. [/ QUOTE ] To the guy who walks out if his house after staring into a light bulb maybe. Junk I say, Junk. We all see different. Some guys can't see red and green just like some guys can't see in the dim light well. Turn your scope down and.. holy cow!!!! the image becomes brighter. Open both eyes bowhunting and...the image becomes brighter. Yes, the law is the law. Notice that I didn't say it was well researched before it was made. Let, many old laws need revamping. Doc
Re: Question for bowhunters Unless we want people deer hunting all night, we have to apply some defined standard. Relationship to sunrise and sunset is as good a standard as any and better than most. It certainly is not something that we should simply leave up to the opinion of the individual hunter. I really don't like the situation where hunters are shooting at each other simply because they THOUGHT they could see adequately. Hopefully we don't have to resort to individual eye tests either......lol. I think the sunrise and sunset standards work pretty darn good and are certainly clear with no requirement for study and interpretation.
