lil hunter
Well, tomorrow, and next weekend are the only days left that I will have an oppertunity to kill a deer. And I may not get to go next saturday(dads been workin saturdays, thats why i didn't hunt this morning) I was just readin wtnhunt's post about lowering standards, and now I can't decide what deer I wanna pass on, or leave. This year I have seen a forkhorn, a 6 pointer, and a smaller 8 pointer. I'm assuming those 3 deer are probably still around somewhere. There are also about 3 mature does, and several yearlings. I would like to shoot a doe really, because the 6 and the 8 will both be nice deer next year, but I've seen very few does this year. And even less mature ones. What should I do? Shoot the next deer I see?(even if it's a fawn) Or wait for a mature doe, or one of the bigger bucks to show up? Theres not too many bucks in the area, but if I get a chance at the forkhorn, do you think I should shoot him, or wait for something a little bigger. I would guess that he is 1.5 years old. Help me out here guys
VTbowman
Re: What to do what to do. If it were me, I would shoot the largest legal animal that presented itself. I would however not shoot a fawn if thats all that came out. Legal or not. JMO
JimT
Re: What to do what to do. Shoot the next one you see...Without a doubt. No one here is going to pick on you if you shoot a fawn. Not me anyways. A deer is a deer.
Chrud
Re: What to do what to do. I wouldn't kill a fawn, but I wouldn't necessarily wait on a big mature doe. Nothing wrong with 1 1/2 year old does.
wtnhunt
Re: What to do what to do. lil, I have killed quite a few deer and did not used to have any standards, but started seeing more deer after letting the little ones walk. I really think you need to get the monkey off your back bud. Fawns aside, you really should consider killing the first legal deer you see. tedicast
Re: What to do what to do. I hunted hard for 10 years before I got my first deer. At the end of legal shooting light, on the last day of my 10th season. a doe and a skipper ran bye me. The doe never slowed ,but the skipper stopped. She was my first deer. She field dressed at 43 pounds, I know she was a fawn, but I couldn't have been prouder. Kiliing that deer gave me confidense that I could actually do it. In those first 10 years, I missed at least 6 or 7 deer. Since killing my first deer, I have yet to miss.If you are down to your last days, I hve to agree with everyone else. Shoot the first legal deer you see. You have all you life to pass on young deer. Good luck Lil...whatever your first deer is, it's a trophy! VermontHunter
Re: What to do what to do. Same thing here if it's brown and legal it's down !!! and give it the same effort next season that you gave this season. A trophy is in the eye of the beholder so put the guilt aside and show us some pics !! Happy and safe hunting..
huntinsonovagun
Re: What to do what to do. In my opinion, a person has to get a few under his or her belt before they can start passing on deer. I am sure everyone here has killed a scrub or 2, including myself. NO shame in it, you have to start somewhere!! Shoot the next one that walks by!!
sportsman2500
Re: What to do what to do. kill for meat!!! brown it's down!! i'm in your shoes man. lil hunter
Re: What to do what to do. Well, I hunted until 9 yesturday mornin, didn't see a thing. Not even a darn squirrel. I have next weekend, maybe just Sunday to shoot one. I don't think I'll be passing on any. By this time of year, even the fawns should be fairly large so... I just need to get my shot at a deer.
