Weatherby 257

I'm thinking about a .257 Weatherby but never having owned one, I need a little advice. What is the best model for overall hunting and why? Also, how about the Vanguards sub MOA variety? I know they only offer it in 24" barrels but I recently read that 26" barrel may not be all that necessary with the .257.

Re: Weatherby 257

I have the Mark V Lazermark. My dad bought it for me years ago and it has killed many many deer and antelope. I love the quality of the wood, as well as the rich high luster blue on it. It is simply a beautiful pices to have in my collection and it's accuracy is out of this world. I switched to loading the barnes TSX BT bullet in the 100 grain size this year and have had nothing but good things to say about it. The factory ammo is expencive for it if thats what you'll be shooting. Look for arounf 40.00 a box. I personally am not a fan of the Vanguard rifles because I believe they are made by another company and just stamped with the weatherby name. If your going to make the choice to join the club of being a weatherby owner I would recommend buying a true weatherby, but thats just my opinion. I have three now and they are some of my most prized possessions.

Re: Weatherby 257

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually looking at the fibermark, ultra light or the accumark with a composite stock. I really love the lazermark but I know I would hurt it in the field.

All my hunting loads are reloads with Barnes TSX, too. Thus my interest in the .257.

I had similar thoughts on the Vanguard but was really interested in the 24 v. 26" barrel issue.

Have you shot the ultra light?

Re: Weatherby 257

I have the Mark V Ultra Lightweight and I love it. I just got the rifle last february and havent shot anything with it yet except for paper. I load the 100 grain barnes tsx in my gun also and they shoot great... down to a half inch if you let the barrel cool between the 2nd and 3rd shot. Its deffinantly not a target gun because that little #2 contour barrel gets hot pretty quick. Im shooting weatherby brass, federal 215m primers, 73.5 grains of reloader 22, and of course the 100 grain tsx.

The barrel on my gun is not free floated and I think that it may be what is causing the third shot to jump up and right. Even without letting it cool it will still shoot right at an inch. It will stack the first two but the third is always high and to the right about 3/4" away. I just dont know if free floating that light of a contoured barrel is going to be helpful. AJ may be able to elaborate on that point a little more.

Re: Weatherby 257

Sorry it took me so long to respond I have been pretty busy... Its really not very bad at all. My gun isnt really all that lightweight anymore though b/c I have a burris black diamond 4-16 scope and a harris 25" bipod on the front and between the two they weigh it down quite a bit. It is by far less than my 30-06, so it doesnt bother me at all and I can shoot it at the bench all day long. I am decent sized 6'1" and about 200 pounds, but deff not the biggest guy around.

I think that I am going to ditch the bipod and burris here after rifle season and switch to a lighter zeiss or leupold and a lighter ring and base... maybe a talley system. I think that the recoil will increase a little bit but not much, and I really just want to take the rifle back to what it really is... light.
