Monopod/shooting stick question.

I got a shooting stick a couple months ago and really haven't practiced with it like I should have. I went out and shot some the other night (when I sighted in my 243) and found that I could actually shoot better off hand than with the stick. I had a hard time keeping it from moving side to side.

What part of the gun do you set on it, and do you hold the stick or the gun? I'll be using it (maybe) from a sitting position on a hanging stand.

After no success sighting in with the stick I moved to my sandbags.

Re: Monopod/shooting stick question.

I have one too. I typically have a problem with it drifting. My form is probably junk but ill tell you what I do and it helps.

I put the end of the forearm on it. The closer you are to the center of the rifle the more you can cause the shot to be off from what ive noticed.

I hold both the stick and stock. I pinch the stock between in index finger and thumb. I then hold the stick with my other three fingers and palm. Its a lot more solid that way.

Instead of lining my feet up with the stick I put them perpendicular to the shot. I know that is pretty poor form but it keeps me from drifting.

Re: Monopod/shooting stick question.

I tried it from a sitting position and had some better results. I put the bottom of the stick into my fanny pack and put the fork on my swivel stud and pressed down and in. The stud made for a nice solid spot to brace against and made for a very steady hold.

I didn't try it, but I think it would work from a standing position just as well like that.
