Guest retiredMN1
I am a first time hunter and would like to know what would be a decent rifle to use for Deer hunting?

VTbowman
Re: Deer Hunting Gun I see your user name has "retired" in it so I assume your not a young person. 1st time hunter, old or not, should start by looking around the .243, .25-06, .270, .308 calibers IMHO. I started on a 30-06 and was a bit scared of it for a long while until I grew bigger.. LOL I did not like recoil... I wish I had a .243 back then... johnf
Re: Deer Hunting Gun One of these NEF handi rifles in 243 with a Nikon Pro-staff 3-9x40 would do everything you need. You can get the whole setup for under $400. Ammo is cheap, recoil is light the gun is light, short, very accurate and very reliable. It is plenty gun for any deer in the country as well as other small game and preditors. It has plenty power out to 300 yards and won't blow your arm off. It's a great all around caliber/gun/scope combination.
Shaun_300
Re: Deer Hunting Gun I'd reccomend a .243, .260, 7mm-08, or .308. They all have good range and knock down power to drop a whitetail in it's tracks. It all depends on the area too, if you hunt elk too at long ranges you may want to have a look at a .270, .30-06 or a WSM caliber. I'd reccommend a Remington Model 7 or Model 700. Guest retiredMN1
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Am 42, and retired Military, have shot the M1, M14, M16, 12ga and 20ga Shotguns, .45, 9mm, .38 revolver and 60 cal Machine gun. Just moved to Michigan, and was given some deer meat, now the wife wants me to take up hunting. That's why I am looking for a moderately priced gun . As for range, I probably wouldn't shoot no more than 100 yds max.

The nef would get you a lot more range if big daddy deer stepped out at 300 yards.
WaCoyote
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Look at the savage line. They have "package guns" that come with a scope. They arent the prettiest things in the world but they are very accurate. As far as caliber I'd look at a common caliber. The ammo is cheaper and easier to find. I'd look at a .270, .308, or a 30-06. The remington 700 is reasonably priced too I'd consider it as well. There are dozens of calibers that will work well but since your a beginner just go with a common caliber and an inexpensive accurate rifle. I read about the NEF handi rifle above but thats a single shot. Nothing against them but I prefer to have a repeater. It's ultimately up you. Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Deer Hunting Gun They all work. It's hard to pick one over another IMO. I do look for a caliber where ammo is readily available. .270, .308, 30-06 followed by 300 Sav. and 30-30 I think every hick town has someone who sells these or someone reloads or has a relative that reloads these. The commoners are cool. As far as specific brand. X is good but y-brand is better yet more expensive. I'm not sure if there is any garbage out there. Guest shotist
Re: Deer Hunting Gun [ QUOTE ] I probably wouldn't shoot no more than 100 yds max. [/ QUOTE ] A 12ga shotgun with a fully rifled barrel is pretty tough to beat under 100 yards. If a rifle floats your boat, a 30/30 or 35Rem lever action is more than adequate. Any of these 3 can be found used and on the cheap...and they will kill any deer just as dead as anything else.
LifeNRA
Re: Deer Hunting Gun [ QUOTE ] now the wife wants me to take up hunting. [/ QUOTE ] GOOD WIFE!!! I started out on the 30-30, but now use a 270.
wtnhunt
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Like I posted in your thread in the deer hunting room. A lot of good rifles out there in the price range you are talking. Personally I would go with a remington model 700 in a .270. Top it with a nikon buckmaster or a burris fullfield II scope. If you are looking to spend a little less the savage model 10 is a really accurate rifle. The browning a-bolts are very nice. Tikka and Ruger also have some nice rifles that would work well for you. Best thing for you to do would be to go to a shop and shoulder some of these different guns and see which ones feel right to you. The remington 700 to me just feels right, why I chose it over most others, but that is all about personal preference.
AJ
Re: Deer Hunting Gun I would vote for the Handi Rifle in .243 Winchester, 7-08 Remington, 25-06 Remington, 270 Winchester, 280 Remington, .308 Winchester, or 30-06 Springfield. Any of these will work very well for your needs, and like was mentioned earlier, will not break the bank. The gun is right around $200 and adding a decent $150 scope will give you decent equipment that will shoot as well as many $1000 setups. The single shot will force you to make the shot count as you don't have a rapid back up shot.
Guest retiredMN1
Re: Deer Hunting Gun If you go to the Deer hunting room, I put in my post the 4 choices that I've narrowed everthing down to. It now all depends on feel and price.
wtnhunt
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Of the 4 choices you mentioned, while you are there I would look at a couple others as well. The .308 would be my choice over the 30-30 hands down.
Jeramie
Re: Deer Hunting Gun I agree with William, take up the .308. Ive hunted with the 30/30 and while it is an old, very effective cartridge, it simply doesn't carry the energy of the .308. Both the 30/30 and.308 Rounds are easy to come but the .308 is very flat shooting. Its plenty big enough to take most North American Game too. You punch a decent quality .308 round through a deer's boiler room and its all over at 100yds and well beyond. From my experience I would never take a shot over 100yds with the 30/30. You may feel like that is sufficient now but with a little practice you may be shooting well over 100yds very easily. With a good scope, a little range time, and a steady rest a 100yd shot is a chip shot.
ousoonerfan22
Re: Deer Hunting Gun I would choose the Handi rifle or the Remington model seven in a 243 or 308.
wtnhunt
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Actually the 30-30 rounds may be a bit tougher to find in some places. Wal mart here does not carry as good a selection for the 30-30 as they do for most other popular deer calibers.

A decent scope (I have one on my .300 win mag). Can't go wrong with that set up in either .270, .308 or 30-06. THe .270 shoots a little flatter but the .30 cal's above carry more energy and produce a larger wond channel. On should someone bring moose, elk, black bear or antelope meat over,, don't worry. Either one of those cartridges will dispatch of all those animals within reason.
Guest shotist
Re: Deer Hunting Gun Moderately priced, 100 yards maximum? I'm still thinking of a 30/30, 35Rem or the fully rifled shotgun with cantelever scope mount. If it can shoot within 4 MOA and has 1000ft-lbs when it gets there (waaay plenty enough), you'll make short work of every deer that you can hit well.
