Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

Welcome to the forums.

You will get a pretty wide range of answers here. Really depends on what you are wanting to spend. For the money a remington model 700 is a great gun. Been hunting with one in a .270 for several years and will be using it for many years to come.

If you dont think $600-700 is that expensive, a browning a-bolt is a really nice rifle. Might go to a shop and try shouldering some different rifles and see how they feel to you.

Welcome to the Forums!!

I was also looking at getting a good deer hunting rifle. I was looking at a Remington 710 in .270 and you can usually pic them up for around $350 around here. A friend of mine has one and he loves it.

I just bought that exact model and caliber two days ago. That model isn't the quality of the 700 but if your looking for something in the $300 range thats hard to beat.

First off...Welcome to the Forums!

Providing you have a recent Hunters Safety Course you should check your states hunting regulations to see what the minimum caliber is for hunting deer.

No sense in buying something if you cant use it!!!

Also your choice should take into consideration how far you plan on taking a shot at a deer. Some calibers are better for shorter distances and others better for farther shots.

Me personally I have 2 rifles...1 for shorter more brushy areas where a long shot is impossible...a Marlin 30-30. A great begginner rifle and much less expensive than some others.

The other one is a Remington 7400 in .270 caliber for more open areas.

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

Don't forget to look at Savage Arms. Generally not the best looking wood, but they are a very good shooting gun right out of the box.

As far as caliber......It depends on where you hunt and what you can deal with for recoil. .308, 7mm-08, 270, and 30-06 are good all around calibers.

Make sure you get a gun that fits you, and have the scope set up properly.

Do not cheap out and buy the 710. It is not a 700, if you are looking to spend less money look at a savage model 10. It can be bought around $400 and is a lot better gun than the 710. If you are looking to spend between $500 and $700 like you say here, you have a lot of options. You could get a model 700 and a pretty nice scope and still have some money leftover for a box of shells.

As far as recoil, the .270 is pretty easy on recoil, the .243 is a great round for deer and has very light recoil, but would not personally go with anything lighter than a .243.

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

I bought a 710 but in 30.06 in december of last year. I haven't had any problems. I can shoot and kill whitetail at over 300 yards with it now. I got into a group of deer while my father and a buddy were driving it to me and I emptied my gun on them killing 3. When we got out of the woods they all thought that I had taken the semi auto with me. Just an example of how fast the gun can be unloaded

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

Thanks for the help so far. I got a copy of Gun Digest Deer Guns from the library for help as well.

I went thru and made a list of what I liked, and came up with what you guys recommend as well as the Browning BLR 81, and the Winchester 94 Timber.

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

I've narrowed it down to 4:

Browning BLR 81

Winchester M70

Remington 7400

All in 308,

and last, Marlin 336C in the 30-30

Are these good choices? I plan to look at each of them up close this week at my local retailer.

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

Of the .308 or the 30-30 personally I would go with the .308. Looks like you are not sure what type of action you want.

Personally for a deer rifle I like bolt action, but that is just me. While you are looking it would not hurt to look at a savage model 10 and a remington model 700.

Re: Beginner Deer Hunter

Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to go look at a couple of guns this weekend and see what fits my price range and what feels good.

Probably won't buy until after my tax return comes in, since thats when I'll have the most money.
