AaronS
When you all shoot different brands of ammo in a new gun to see what it likes best, at what distance do you shoot your 3 shot groups?
AJ
Re: 3 shot groups? It depends on the gun and situation. If its a smoothbore slug gun, I will shoot for record at 75 yards. If ts a rifled bore shooting sabots, I will shoot it at 100 yards.
Tominator
Re: 3 shot groups? When I got my rifled barrel for my 870, I stepped off 75 yards which for a novice slug hunter for myself, with open sights seemed more than enough as a max range. I can remember trying 3 different brands of slugs. Lightfields were good, Remingtons stunk, but the 3" Winchester mag sabots worked the best. I can remember that 3 shot group made a cloverleaf pattern on my target, so that's what I still hunt with to this day.
AaronS
Re: 3 shot groups? Thanks guys. It is an 870 with a rifled cantilever barrel, topped with a Nikon Prostaff. I shot this weekend, and was reminded once again that I am a better bow shot than I am a gun shot. I just need to break down and buy a Lead Sled. Saves a lot of pain with slugs and those gentle shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads.
Mach1
Re: 3 shot groups? I bought a box each of Lightfield 2 3/4" Hybrids, Remington 2 3/4" Buckhammers, and Rem. 2 3/4" Copper Solids. All three grouped nearly identical out of my 870 at 50 and 100 yards. I shot from a shooting rest with TruGlo rifle sights. I was impressed by the performance of all three. They do pack more of a punch than the Copper Solids, but not quite as much as the BuckHammers. I would definately give them a shot out of your 870. I'm going with the Copper Solids this year just because I've got a couple more boxes of them than the others.
LETMGROW
Re: 3 shot groups? I threw away 5 boxes of Copper Solids because I shot at 3 deer and never killed one of them! I switched to Win. Sabots- Problem solved. I have talked to several hunters who have had the same results.

I'll stay with the Copper Solids for around $8-9 for a box. A shot in the kill zone with any slug/sabot will put the deer down. I've heard many good things about the Copper Solids and am looking forward to putting a deer down with them. My 870 only gets used in the situation that we are doing a drive or I'll be in super thick cover. Any other time the .50 cal muzzleloader will do the trick. Guest Rhinodog
Re: 3 shot groups? Yesterday, I shot 3" buckhammers and core-lokt's. Both grouped good, but I'm gonna go with the buckhammers. The core-lokt's shot about 10" higher than the buckhammers at 100 yds. Both left 3 shot group holes that touched at 100 yds also. LETMGROW
Re: 3 shot groups? Your 870 with a rifled barrel is capable of good group shots 125 yards. With a lot of range time this could be stretched out further if you were willing to pay the price of ammo etc. If you anticipate 100 yard shots then by all means sight in for 100 yards. BUT if you sight in for 100 yards shoot 3 shot groups at 50 yards so you know how your gun/ bullet combination performs. It may shoot high, low or on the money. It really sickens me to hear hunters say they are dead on at 100 yds., 50 yds. etc. when they really don't have a clue. For ex. I sight in my rifles at 100 yards. Generally they shoot low at 50 yards. I want to know how low so I can compensate for the trajectory. Only practice and range time can confirm this! NOT someone's opinion or a trajectory chart you found on an ad or the internet etc. To put it another way, guns are like people. They all have a different personality. Treat them that way.
