what do you think of this for a lever big bore?

Alright fella's and ladies I have to ask some opinions of you all and if this is even possible.

I have always thought it to be neat to own a lever with a small power scope on it to harvest whitetails with. Yes the 45-70 is tried and true but everyone has one and I always like to be a little different. The 450 doesnt do much more than a hot handloaded 45-70. So I had an idea........ grin.gif

What if, purely hypothetical now, you had a lever action made that would accept the .458 win mag? I know the first thought is obviously overkill. But I would be handloading these and would reduce the load down to spit out a 300 grain bullet at 2400 fps. Just for retrospect my Nosler reloading manual said the 45-70 was pumpin them out at 2200 fps. I think it would just give you some more oomph a little more range, and a neat gun to boot.

So what do you think? Is there a company that makes these guns? If not what would you imagine the cost to have one made? Just one of those random thoughts I had while sitting on the tree stand. Thanks for reading.

Uh, no. There is no lever action made that would withstand the beating it would give. The 45-70 or 450 Marlin will shoot plenty far and be effective on deer and bears to 250 yards. You will not be getting much distance going to a 458 Win Mag. Some can make a 458x2" but its like the hot 45-70s and 450 Marlin. If you want an open plains gun, get a smaller bullet. If you want a big bore keep it realistic indistance. If you want a lever to shoot all ranges lookk at the Browning BLR in 30-06.

John......

Like AJ, I'm not so sure it's really "do-able". O.K...........anything's do-able. But from a structural standpoint, you'd end up with one bulky hunk of steel.

That being said............ I love the way you think!!!!! wink.gif You'd make a fine candidate for the Off the Porch Gang !! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I love the idea. I got to spend some bench time with a '95 .405 Win. a couple months back. That rifle will talk to you at the back end!! shocked.gif It's gotta be a dandy killer in front, too. wink.gif

If you would like to see what a .405 Win will do to a big bodied Montana buck watch the new monster bucks video. Larry Weisham(sp?) shoots a big whitetail in an alfalfa field in Montana with an encore rifle chambered in .405 Win. It deff does a number. I dont know if it is because of the lighting or what, but you can actually see the copper bullet flying through the air, impact the deer, and blow through the other side into the alfalfa on the ground. Its even cooler when they put it in slow mow!!! grin.gif

If the sun angle is just right, I have seen many 3000+fps bullets flying through the air through the spotting scope, all the way to 1000 yards. It is slick!

This sounds kind of neat however if they have captured this on film....follow the bullet right into the animal smile.gif I've seen several videos where you could follow the supersonic wake of the bullet into the animal, but never where you could see the sunlight glistening off the actual bullet jacket. Going to have to check that video out.
