Guest INHunterman
Is it safe to shoot rifled slugs through a smoothbore 26" barrel?

AJ
Re: 26\" barrel for slugs Yes it is. It is perfectly safe to shoot a rifled slug out of any shotgun barrel, smooth bore or rifled and you cna use any standard choke from improved cylinder to full or rifled choke tube. You will probably get the best results from an improved cylinder though. Like Hoss mentioned you need to use a rifled barrel for sabots though. They must be spun to stabilize. LETMGROW
Re: 26\" barrel for slugs I have shot sabots from a 26" Rem-Choke barrel with the rifled choke screwed into it. It is a tack driver, but a bit clumsy to carry. If you dont have screw in chokes you don't want to shoot saboted slugs. They will flip flop and you won't be able to hit anything. Like anything else, try a number of different types [brands] of ammo and use what shoots best in your gun. I used a Winchester mod. 50 full choke gun for slugs for quite a while because I didn't have anything else. I found Remington slugs shot best in it. I measured A few brands of slugs and found some to vary as much as .025" in diameter. Normally though, as A.J. stated, Imp. Cyl. is the preferred choice unless you are willing to shell out for a slug barrel. If you opt for the slug barrel you might want to go for the rifled barrel and try several different types of ammo in it.
