Here is an article that was in the paper upstate in Sullivan County. The ECON that made the arrest, Scott Steingart, is a friend of ours too. I cut the article out but left it at the cabin. So I did some googling and found it.

Cops say men shot buck from pickup

By Victor Whitman

November 11, 2006

Fremont – Two Rockland County residents face several misdemeanor charges for “jacklighting” and shooting a young buck in Fremont.

At about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, Stainislaw Jakubiak, 47, and Andi Kowalcze, 54, of New City, were spotted by a resident who says they were spotlighting deer from a Chevy pickup near Mileses.

DEC Officer Scott Steingart and his police dog, Buck, later tracked the pair to a nearby campground, where police say they had dragged the 80-pound yearling buck and covered it in leaves.

Regular deer season doesn’t begin until Nov. 18. It is illegal to spotlight deer, a method of using a spotlight to freeze the animal by the side of the road.

The two were charged with misdemeanors that included illegal taking of a deer and possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle. They were arraigned in Fremont Town Court and posted $1,100 bail each.

“They could be looking at up to $4,000 in fines, a year in jail and loss of their sporting licenses for five years,” DEC Lt. Deming Lindsley said. “It is another case where we wouldn’t have known about it if it hadn’t been for a concerned citizen.”
